Brian Tooley valve springs tested after DD for a year(2015 UPDATE ON P. 3 POST 42)

I put in a set of Brian Tooley platinum spings last winter this same time after valve float on the dyno from worn out springs. When I ordered, Brian was great to deal with and explained that I could use my current hardware with his springs. Saved some money. He also said since I was using the TV2(.595/.598) cam I could probably get 3 years out of them by shimming each year. More money saved. Well one year is up after them being just dropped in. Car gets driven nearly everyday for work. I average about 1000 miles a month. 6400 rpm shift, automatic car. Here are the results:
Rated: After a year:
155@1.780 140@1.800 (where machine shop measured them)
380@1.200 370@1.200
400@1.150 390@1.150
Pretty impressive, I thought. I measured a couple install heights on my heads and am coming up around 1.800 not the 1.780(could be tool I'm using). True coil bind was measured to be 1.055. I am not using Brian Tooley retainers and believe that may be why installed heights are off. Brian recommended that I set them up at 1.750. Since I am coming up around 1.800 I ordered .015 and .030 shims and plan to shim each spring .045. This should put the install height at 1.755. Pretty close. This will still easily allow me to shim another .015 next year if the springs are found to be out, we'll see.
Thanks again Brian for a great spring at affordable princes.

I have Patriot Gold .660" springs on a set of nice ported heads that I purchased here with 5K miles and I'm debating the BTR springs exactly for the longevity purposes you've reinforced here.
Quality products from a well known LS guru. Hard to go wrong there imho.
Ordered his lifters just a few days ago, hoping that they perform as well as his springs do.

We try to sell nothing but his springs just for this reason! I have always said that Brian's springs were some of best on the market and I'm glad to see independent testing being done to prove it! Good write up OP

I put a set of BTR springs on last year, made a few dyno pulls, a hundred or so passes and put 3000 miles on the car. The cam was a Tick street heat stage 2 cam. I just sent the heads to TEA to get ported, they checked the springs and said they checked fine so no need to replace them. So that's what I am doing, going to run another season.

I am new to the LS scene. I did as much studying and asking questions to those who are in the know as a guy could do and ordered a cam kit that included a set of BTR springs 3 months ago. Not knowing who was REALLY good or not I relied on others advice. A write up like this sure gives me peace of mind knowing the parts I received do indeed have a good performance history, not to mention solidifying the sellers reputation for recommending them!
THANKS FOR THE WRITE UP!

Current platinum springs aren't anything alike with Patriots. The old gold springs he sold when he first started up were the same spring as the Patriot Extremes which he sold at a lower price as well (and those are still good springs, the Patriot retainer/seat not so much).
The spring is only half the story with Brian's kits. He designed the retainer and seat around his platinum spring and max pressure springs so that they were light to increase valve-train control and spring life but also fit the spring ID.
I personally tested his retainer designs on a MTS machine to verify their strengths on a pull test against the patriot retainer which uses super7 locks which you'd think are stronger as well as more titanium which is quite heavier and my test data showed that his lightweight retainer is still just as strong combined with the stock style locks as the bulkier Patriot with super7 locks! This is also why his tool steel retainer kit is amazing because you get a steel retainer that is still strong and as light as the old titanium Patriot retainer but you get that kit at a cheaper price than any Extreme kit ever cost and get the better platinum springs.

Where's the
emoticon Ed? LOL
Ed knows they're not the same, he just loves poking his ole buddy... Ed knows our Platinum springs are more like the Manley, Lunati or Comp 26925 than the Patriot.
The Patriot Gold springs were fairly poor springs that lost load quickly. So definitely consider replacing those.
The Xtreme springs were actually decent springs except for the gold coating on the outer springs that caused them to lose load quickly, although not as fast as the Gold springs.
There was a short run of Patriot springs that were made by PAC that might have better longevity, but I don't know that for sure.
