Default Melling or OE GM pump for new motor build.

I'm building the iron LS2 in my sig for the TA. I had ordered a OE GM pump for it but was having second thoughts about maybe going with the melling stock volume high pressure pump. Any reason to go with melling over an OE or just throw OE pump in and go?

Which pump is the high volume stock pump?

Do you have a part number?

No such thing as a "stock" high volume pump.

GM does offer a high volume pump, number 17801830.

I'd reach for the Melling HV pump before the GM pump.

Whats the benefit of the melling over the gm pump is it a reliability factor or better pressure and volume. Running the HV pump is there a possibility of pumping the pan dry with motor wound up tight. I would def like to see more oil pressure on the new engine than what the old one runs.

The Melling 10296 has 18% more volume over stock. I have it.

I would consider Melling better quality than GM.

I would look into precision oil pumps. They are top notch

Only reason I bring up the pumping the pan dry is I had a 07 vmax 6.0 and went with a 224 TSP cam in it and the 10296 oil pump and after you would drive it hard it continually had a rough idle and the lifters would start ticking. Give it a few minutes and it would smooth out and the lifters would shutup all the while having slightly lower oil pressure for a few minutes and it was always on my mind of if the pump was the cause of it and pumping the pan dry. I tried running a extra quart of oil in it but no dice didn't help it a bit.

Ported stocker or the Melling 295 pump. No real reason to run higher volume unless you have really loose clearances.

I run a ported GM LS4/DOD pump. It's the HV pump, but I have short-travel lifters and no lifter trays, so I get a little better oil control on the top end. And it still doesn't pump like an Melling 296 pump.

Ok then for a complete stock bottom end new gm iron block and using OEM gm bearings and new GM crank. new gm lifters and the ASA cam. Does the 10295 melling get the nod? Since there seems to be no consensus any freakin where as to which pump to use under what circumstances and why.

Bottom line I want more oil pressure than stock.

Stock mine carried 40 psi hot idle. Now with way looser bearing tolerances, Mellings HVHP pump it idles 55 psi hot.

Then go with a Katech ported OEM oil pump, that's what I have. It provides about 10 psi more pressure at "up to temp idle" and stock volume.

Since it's an iron block your tolerances will be looser than and aluminum block. Just go with a stock pump and add the red high-pressure spring.

SydwayZ, welcome to LS1tech!

When you reply to threads, have a look at the last post's date. It may be a pretty old and concluded conversation.

With my TMS built LS3 I bought after my LS1 grenaded at Road America -- TMS adds the one year engine warranty if you go with the Melling pump -- for a reason, obviously. I went with it -- no brainer.

Vendors can offer more warranty with "upgrade" parts because you bought more and they made more money that could go towards a small percentage of warranty claims.
And extra warranty is a sales tool to get you to buy the "upgrade".
