Default New heads install question

So I'm trying to mentally prepare my self for my upcoming install of AI 243 heads. My question is when I was reading thru the write up on ls1howto they said to remove the exhaust y pipe to remove the headers. Is this really necessary? I was hoping to just unbolt the headers from the head and maybe just loosen the clamp on the y pipe to slightly rotate them away from the head. Any thoughts on this from you guys who have done this?

I did it the way you described, it worked just fine. You can leave the catback and the Y in the car.

Awesome thanks! I was hoping that would work out. I hate dropping the exhaust if I don't have to

I had to remove y pipe to get my heads out. The bottom head bolts hit the header tubes. After that I just lowered the headers along side of the block. I'm using pacesetter long tubes and the pacesetter ory.

I was wondering about that. Maybe it works with some headers and not others

A Scranton guy, eh? Didn't notice that until now! I am from there originally (actually Moscow), but live in Philly now. I spend plenty of time up there in the summer.

I'm running Kook's 1-3/4 long tubes, and a Kooks off road Y... FYI

How do y'all think this would work with stock manifolds? I'm swapping to stock 243s, wasn't trying to drop the exhaust cause I have no jacks/jack stands.
