If it were me I would tear it down with rust that bad. You also have to consider the rings will be corroded, stick in the ring land, the engine could end up smoking like a diesel.

Yeah the ring lands are probably full of crap

OP you can try running it as is, treat it as a new engine break in and do a bunch of high rpm pulls in manual 2 and 3 and let it engine break down to idle and create a vacuum and hopefully sucks the ring debris out of the exhaust.

It's a gamble but depends how much time/luck you have!!

If you don't feel comfy with that, I'd pick up another used shortblock

what ever happened to people rubbing grease on the cylinder walls or even using wd-40 when they know they will be tore down for a little while?

To tell you the truth Ive had the same issue after a 3.4l V6 blew a head gasket...I just cleaned up the affected cylinder walls the best I could and ran it. Didnt smoke and didnt have low compression. Ran like a top till I sold it.

Its luck of the draw I guess. The way I see it just throw it back together and run it see how it does. The worst outcome would be a rebuild anyways...

It was a long block I bought, and popped the heads and that's what I have to work with. If it smokes I'll tear it down and do 30 over and put rods and pistons in it.

That looks pretty rough.

I'd soak it with WD-40 and turn it over manually to get the WD-40 into the ring pack best you can do.

Put some cheap *** oil in it and run it for 60 seconds or so. Then change the oil. Clean the motor out with the oil. Autozone usually has a sale on that Valvoline NextGen crap. Recycled oil. 5.3Qt for $5. Run that through to clean the crap out of the motor with a cheap ACDelco filter.
