Default 1st rebuild.. Need advice.

Okay I have a 2000 z28 with 120k miles. My car has an exhaust manifold leak , and needs shocks and struts. I just had a horrible experience with a mechanic and long story short my motor is done for.

This car is my DD , and I would like it to be for a while until I get the funds to pick up a hot shot vehicle .

So my question is what should I go with and try to budget ?

A complete motor swap ? If I did that I would try to find an 01-02 ls1 because of the intake , heads . That seems like the best option but what worries me is the possibility of it going bad or leaking oil within a few 1,000 miles of owning it.

or longblock with a warranty ? I would have to upgrade my intake also to the ls6 intake.

or have someone just rebuild the motor in the car and spruce it up some..

Whats the labor price on having someone hook up a long block and drop it in ? or having a motor swap done ?
since the car will be ripped apart what else should I upgrade ? I have stock everything.

have your current engine rebuilt ,consider a 383 stroker .or buy a running engine and sell your long block .consider a 5.3 swap ,they can be found for cheap .

what is the price for all that ? I have no idea where to start to even sell my long block etc. 5.3 swap ? more details on that noob here...

If i buy a running engine I want to find an 01-02 SS or ws6 motor.
what would the cost be to rebuild it with a 383 ? If i did that i would want to upgrade the heads, cam , and intake also..

whats labor cost going to be ?

I am thinking of buying a good low mile long block from a 01-02 SS or WS6 from ebay... What else would I need to update also ? I would have to purchase the ls6 intake ,ls6 valley cover Would I need a bigger throttle body ? or would my stock throttle body from my 00 z28 work fine ?. What else would be good to do since the motor is already being torn down and rebuilt ?

What is your budget? The cost to have a shop pull your engine and rebuild then reinstall is not going to be cheap. I'm not business but I've done quite a few engine changes for people over the years and on something like a Camaro I would charge $400-$800 depending what all needed to be swapped over. A shop mechanic is probably going to charge twice that not including the cost of the rebuild/replacement engine.
What is wrong with your engine?

I also agree that a used low mileage 5.3 is probably going to be the cheapest route but it won't perform as well as the 5.7 did. 5.3's in my area sell for $400-700 range. I've also managed to find a couple 6.0 truck engines for around $600 either one would work.
Do you have any local car clubs? Maybe you could get some help locally and save some money.

"right way" means a whole lot of different things to different people.

Align your budget and schedule first, then go from there.

I took my car in to get a rear main seal repaired. Leak never got fixed and I picked up my car with the service engine light on , milky dipstick , and one nasty knock .

I am getting the funds together.. I will be able to make a move here soon...

I want a good reliable daily driver ... I dont want anything crazy .. my car is 99 percent stock. Id like to rebuild the motor with around 375 to 400 horse...

I have a quote for 3500 to rebuild stock , and 4500 to have it spruced it up. I will post the specs for the rebuild once i receive them.

I'd say chances are you need a new block. I've seen more LS1's crack cylinders than blow headgaskets.

Man, Id say to those prices and just give Thompson Motorsports a call. They are a vendor here and for $3500 you can have a 5.7 iron longblock with a tried and tested 420hp with a warranty. Use your intake and exhaust for now to keep cost down. Headers and an LS6 intake could easily be had for the remaining $1000 or so diff between this engine and the price you were quoted for the hopped up one from your shop. If you didnt want quite the cam it has Im sure they could use one of your choice and it might be cheaper also. Best of luck and keep us posted.

We have some great drop in solutions and about 60 shelf cams to choose from along with countless custom grinds. Give us a call and we will do anything we can to help you with your build. Thank you JRENIGAR for the bump, we really appreciate it.
