Default 03 ls1-Getting most off idle torque

I have an oem corvette ls1. I will be getting either 243 or 799 heads. What are the best ways to get the most off idle torque I can. I am putting this in a rock crawler. Am running an old truck 4 spd with granny low and the gear spacing requires a lot of torque to pull from gear or gear with 37" tires. Having a 5500 rpm rev limit is completely fine. Thanks for all your help.

I would take the 243/799 heads and have about .007 hacked off them then run a .40 cometic gasket. This will give you 11:1 compression but the thinner gasket will give you a much better quench than just using a stock gasket and milling the heads more. Then go with a cam in the 214/218 range ona 114-116 lsa and you will be in a pretty good place

11:1 compression won't be to high for 91 octane fuel in all weather/temperature conditions?

not at all, ls2 and ls7's both knock on the door of 11:1 bone stock. with modern tuning and aluminum heads its really no problem, dynamic compression plays a bigger role in detonation anyway and that is altered by cam selection anyway

Ported 5.3 heads or if you got the cash some AFR 205s will build more torque down low due to the higher compression and better velocity from the runners.

Advance that cam to a 110lsa and you will have a nice tree-stump puller.

I'd love to do a whipple but I'm somewhat limited on what I can spend. I'd like to keep it around $1000 to throw at it. I will also be using either stock exhaust manifolds of some sort or the hooker manifolds due to space restrictions. Are higher ratio rockers a good idea?

I'd keep the stock cam and buy a set of used AFR 205s.

Well why didn't you say you're budget was only $1000?

The heads are going to cost you about $400, so that leaves $600. I would use that to have the heads milled and maybe a valvejob with a little blending into the chamber and port. By the time you buy gaskets, new head bolts, and fluids you should be at a little under your budget.

Where can I get the heads milled and the valves done for a decent price? Seems like AI or TEA are pretty expensive.

FYI, you don't need a 11.0:1 SCR, 10.0-10.5:1 is plenty.
Lots of off idle torque, with one of theses cams!
Both of these are custom grinds.
http://www.texas-speed.com/p-161-com...-camshaft.aspx

210/214 112lsa+4, lift .556"/.559" lobes are Xtreme RPM high lift lobes are #3708(210*), and #3710(214).
If you're willing to sacrifice some valve spring life for even more power, then swap the #3708 (210*) lobes for a XFI #3012(210*) lobes with .595" lift.
With the first cam PAC 1218 valve spring are plenty.
For the second cam PAC 1211X valve springs.

Now if you want a shelf grind then look at the CompCams # 54-408-11(206/212 112lsa+2, lift .515"/.522").

99Bluz28- would stock 799 valve springs handle the first custom cam you mentioned?

And would I see good gains with said cam while keeping the 241 heads I have. Like I said before I'm not looking for awesome hp at 6000 rpm.

No, I'd go with the PAC 1218 valve springs, which can use the stock retainers, locks, and seats.

I'd still have the 241 heads milled to about a 64cc chambers(stock's about 66.6cc) for a slight bump in SCR. Furthermore, consider having the chambers cleaned(smoothed) a little.
