Default Best Head and Cam Package

Hey everyone im swapping an ls1 out of a 2002 z28 into my 87 camaro im rebuilding the block with stock specs but i want to upgrade the heads and cam for a little power and give it a nice sound at idle. I want to run heads that dont require block work. So i think i want to run ls2 heads and just need help deciding on what cam and head upgrades to do.

Ls7 lifters, 243 heads, dual springs, hardened pushrods, ls2 timing chain.

I'd go like a 228r cam. Mild but sounds good and makes power.

Just my $.02

Get the cam kit dual
Springs, but also get ls7 lifters. This is a nice all around cam

Look into a cam from Martin at tick performance also. The 228 is a great cam but it has been outdated. There have been many advancements in valve events since it has been released years ago.

Another for the 243 heads. Some ls7 lifters had lead to noisier valve trains I would run BTRs instead.

Just give me a call. We can discuss your combination and goals and I would be happy to recommend a combination that is right for you. Also if you would like a custom specced cam over an off the shelf cam I can do that for you as well. We don't charge any extra for custom cams. We'd be happy to do it.

If you want a "little power" and sound then a cam only will do it, would be a HUGE step up from whatever you had without the cost of heads. I mean a cam only LS1 will double the available factory HP for that year car.

I'm fond of TEA heads and EPS cams. Mike @ TEA and Geoff @ EPS are great to work with.

I also recommend Tony Mamo @ AFR, Ed Curtis at Flowtech Induction and Brian Tooley to spec out a heads/cam package.

There is so many vendors its hard to make a final decision sometimes. I'm running a Cam Motion grind (228/232) and AI ported 243 heads and it runs pretty well.

I got some feed back from tick and Texas speed and it seems hp wise they will be about the same. So is one brand better than the other. I know through Texas speed I can get a package deal with pushrods and springs for about 600.
