Rotate cam over few times to push lifters up in trays. I used a dowel rod to hold lifters up pushed in all way to back of block. I used intake bolts as a cam handle.

Thanks. On my way to the house to try it. I bought 5/16 steel rod and 5/16 wood dowel rods.

i use heavy duty zip ties to hold them up and thread a couple water pump bots into the cam.

I have it done yeah. I used 5/16 rods and 3 M8 bolts from lowes. I know this is a little off what I asked but do I need an o-ring on the oil pick tube where it goes in the oil pump?

yes there should be an O ring on the pick up tube .. it might still be inside the oil pump if you removed it...

I am getting a MS4 cam for my LS6. This is my first LS engine as well. Am enjoying it so far.
I will be new to this motor as well. Coming from a 2JZ supra.

I am a little confused on the measuring for my pushrod length when it comes to that. Also how can I measure or tell to make sure that my head has not been milled. I bought the car used from a lot that did not know too much of the history.

I use the same method, if you can't a lifter to stay up so you can get a towel all the way in an extendable magnet from the top works great.

Is the dowel rods and magnetic tricks both used for the same purpose to hold the lifters up? I'm gonna be doing a cam swap in a few weeks and this would be some good info

Yeah pretty much. I bought a 5/16 ×3' or 4' metal rod and cut it in half ($5). I found it in the nut, bolt, and tool section at Lowes. I also got 3 bolts M8×1.25 about 3" long to help get the cam in and out. This worked flawlessly for me.
