LS1 water pump question
Hi folks I am getting ready to install a new GM pump in my 02 ss and a mechanic told me to use right stuff on the gaskets, and anti seize on the bolts.I plan on using the anti seize for insurance and permatex water pump gasket RTV also.Do you that have experience think that's okay, I have the aluminum GM gaskets, and I guess the RTV will help hold the gaskets in place.I see people have installed these dry, it wont hurt to add a small amount???? Let me know what you think, and thanks in advance. And this site is very nice.

The Right Stuff has it's place. it sets up really face, and get you out of the garage in a few hours instead of tomorrow. But, it's a real bear to get off later on.
I like to put a small smear of silicone sealant - like Black Magic - on the gaskets during the install. It helps to hold the gasket in place, and lasts just about forever. Not too difficult to remove later, if need be.

85, welcome to LS1tech!
It sounds like the mechanic was giving you advice for an old school small block.
Many people have used RTV only to discover later that it squeezed into the port. Just a coating of Permatex High Tack will do fine. It's also a better goop for sealing the bolt threads as it'll stay and seal forever. Anti-seize is a lubricant and can wash away over time and exposure to heat cycles and coolant.

Our gaskets our dry, no permatex needed. Anyone who tells you different doesn't know what they are talking about. Buy new ones, as stockers don't hold up for 10+ years once removed.

85, if you were to use any sealant on the gaskets, just a light coat of this stuff is all that's needed. You should not need it on these gaskets but a little dab won't hurt.
Now, about the bolts. They do pass into a coolant passage and are exposed to coolant.
You want a SEALANT on the threads, nothing with any type of a lubricant including, moly, anti-seize or Teflon in paste or tape form.
The same Permatex High Tack is amazing on threads exposed to coolant, it'll still be on the threads after 100,000 miles.

Put the bolts through the water pump with a dab of grease right where they exit the block side of the water pump, now slide the gaskets over the bolts and squish into the grease. The grease will help hold the bolts in and the gaskets. Now bolt it on the block and your good to go.
