Default Orange crap on tty head bolts

What is this stuff that GM puts on their head bolts? I just spent an hour cleaning the old crud out of the block with the arp thread cleaner tool, so i really dont want this stuff messing up my torque values.

Should i remove it, or torque them down.

I think it is threadlocker.

I used the gm bolts like you. I didn't clean it off. I've had my heads off a few times and haven't had an issue. Each time I do have the heads off I spray air and brake klean into the holes to make sure there isn't any debris in there. Esp coolant. It's either a type of anti sieze or thread locker

Leave it on. It's there for a reason. It's an anti seize type compound.

Its really dry and crudding up my threads. Id prefer to clean it off and apply my own, new anti-sieze. Isnt that better? No?

Actually its fine. It was the bolt hole. Still had some shmutz in it. Needed a couple more passes of the arp thread cleaner. The orange crud stays on! Thanks

That would be anti-seize, a specific amount of a specific type applied such that the TTY gives the same stretch every time.

Any changes in that material on a TTY bolt can change the % stretch of the bolt as more anti-seize will make the bolt easier to turn, thus making torquing easier and thus effecting the stretch and pre-load put onto the bolt at a specific torque.

I don't think that's 100% true. The torque won't effect stretch in a TTY bolt since it is not fastened to a torque value. It's main function is to prevent galling of the steel bolt in an aluminum thread.

ok, fair point. It may have some effect on the initial torquing of the bolts though (the first step to get all the bolts at a baseline torque before doing the angle torquing)

Went together nicely. Thanks.

Once my pan and valve covers come in, id like to get the oil system primed up.
Whats the cheapest way to do that without the starter attached?

Good choice. And unfortunately spending time cleaning threads is something that is par for the course, though I'm sure its a step lots of people overlook.
