Default 386 CI for $2,000.. Should I buy it?

I went to look at this motor last night and I'll give you some quick specs on it

LS1- Short block
4.125 Bore
stock crank
rods
JE Forged Flat top pistons
Cam
Push Rods
and Lifters

The guys claims the motor only has about 1,200 miles on it. He took it down the track one time, and it started knockin at mid track. They pulled the motor and found out the oil pickup line came loose, and it wasnt getting all the oil that it needed. He said the motor ran fine when they pulled it out, and if I buy it for 2K, put the motor together (its all apart in storage) and i do a compression test and it comes up bad... he'll re0fund my money.. Sound like a good deal? Or would i be better off building somthing on my own? He didnt give me the specs on the cam, but it was some off brand and the motor only made 423 rwhp.

If he'll let you do a compression check and have the crank and rods checked for damage to them, do it. As long as he'll make a complete refund if all is not well. I can't ever find deals like this!!!

I sure wish i could bring all the parts out to a mechanic that knew what he was doing. I looked the block and pistons and crank over fairly well and i didnt see any scaring what-so-ever. I'm still knew to the LS1 game so I hate to jump into somthing and get in way over my head.

Is it a wet or dry sleeve setup? I'd almost be afraid to buy a new all bore motor.. much less a used one.

If it started knocking, it's got a spun bearing. You don't loose the oil pickup and have the engine live for very long. Like he said, the motor probably did run fine before they pulled it, except for a spun bearing. You will basically be buying a $2000 engine you need to rebuild, but resleeved blocks are $2400+ by themselves, so it would most likely be a good deal for the parts you get.

Yeah, I'd rather be safe than sorry. I'll more than likely skip the deal. I was getting so excited about it, but I'd be better off building up a motor the way I want it the first time anyways. Thanks alot for the help fellas. You all probably saved me thousands. Another satisfied LS1TECH.COM customer.

Sometimes "to good to be true" really means it's too good to be true. Try getting the $2K back from the guy once he spends it!

Issue with sleeved blocks is were the sleeves done correctly.

I really doubt anyone would let a good sleeved block go for the price he's asking unless it had something wrong with it.

I'd use that $2000 toward something else.

Find out if the sleeves are wet or dry.

If the sleeves are LA dry - run!
