Default Advise with Timing Chain Damper

Ok I changed the timing set on my 98 formula LS1 engine. I want to install a chain Damper, but don't know which type to purchase. The block is already drilled for one. Any advise would be appreciated.

Katech had one that worked exclusively for the ls1 engine, but I would imagine it would be harder to find these days. You can try contacting them. I have seen people modify ls2 dampers and of the like to work on the ls1 block by re drilling holes or modifying the damper itself.

Since when are 98 LS1s drilled for dampers? It would help to know what engine you were talking about.

My 98 was drilled as well.

I believe most if not all 97-98 blocks had the holes drilled.

I'm talking about an LS1 out of a 98 firebird formula. Are there any other for that year on a formula?

I believe that's true. The 97 Vettes had the provision drilled and perhaps the 98s. But it was again added in the LS6 motors and the later LS1s (01-02). My 02 LS1 block was drilled. I used the Katech Damper. It's expensive as **** tho.

Here is my Katech Damper installed:

This is what I plan on using and probably what Pharcyde50 was referring to. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/tf...5600/overview/

There are two bolt spacings, one wider, one narrower, for those reading.

That bolts right up assuming they would have to drill and tap the holes? No interference whatsoever?

My 97-2000 Vette engine isn't drilled! I used the Trickflow kit & LS2 damper.

Your two post count are the same post in two different locations. Good start.

The trick flow damper is the best route $ wise. My block was already drilled as well but $100 for a damper is just dumb.

If your block is pre-drilled pick up the original tan GMPP damper. The used one above is a good deal.

This is correct. GM used to have a damper available then they stopped. Later they created a newer design commonly seen on the ls2 then changed again with the ls3. The first and second design are similar but different bolt hole spacing. Once the original was canceled people would drill ls1 blocks for the new ls2 design damper. The ls2 & ls3 share the same bolt spacing but are a different design. A lot of builders ditch the ls3 spring loaded in favor for the ls2 as it's more durable and shares the same bolt spacing. The Trick Flow setup from Summit is to retrofit blocks that did not have the holes drilled and uses the cam retainer plate.

Will probably go with the set up from summit, since is half the cost of the original LS1 damper

If you aren't pre-drilled and don't want to spend crazy cash, the Trickflow unit works well.
