Smile Which CAM to build on...

I guess at this point after the 9" install I need to add some power. I looked at N20, a cam or some other minor bolt-ons (LS6/X intake, pulley & a cutout) and am thinking that a cam will be the best bang for the buck.

You can see the rest of the mods done below.

- M6 with 4.11 / 9" locker
- must be in the realm of streetable (the locker puts me on the brink now at times)
- power band to stay under 6500 rpm
- tunable enough to idle with AC
- something that CAM only and a tune will bring me to around 375-390
- I would like to add a set of stage II heads in the future
- it should also be able to take a moderate shot of N20 (< 200)
- I would love to not be changing springs every year (< 10K/year miles driven)
- sound bad-*** and not just bad
- really not looking to go with a stickier tire than a nitto for now
- something that can be built upon to get me into the 10's and then I'm "done"

Looks like no one has ever really had a horrible experience with the TR224 cam (112 lsa would be what I looked at) and I was also looking at the TR230 which many people have also had good things to say about.

If I were to do this I'd be wanting some kind of complete kit so I don't have to worry about having to order something in the middle of the install and would also like to do a LS6 oil pump and a double timing chain which seems like it would add about 140 + 130 to the price (where's the cheapest place)

Are these goals realistic? Could I go bigger and not worry about flycutting? What other cams would you guys recommend.

said FM11 due to you not looking for a max cam setup but the FM13 is great too. would of been my choice had i not gone a different route. the FMS cams have great area under the curve power, one reason i like them.

To fit your criteria.... your going to need a small cam. Something like a 220/220 or something along those lines. IF I were you I would opt for a intake and throttle body. B/c if you are lookin at cams like the TR230 or whichever FMS cam(I'm not much into the FMS cams so I couldn't compare) that is almost comparable in size, you aren't going to meet very many of your standards b/c those cams will probably be a bitch to idle, and will definately need more than 6500 rpm(which I'm assuming you'll have the 6600 rpm rev limit), you'll pretty much need the tuning, you will need a 114 or so LSA unless you plan on running a split duration(with exhaust be expecptionally larger) for that much nitrous, and those cams WILL need valve springs quiet often.

BUT on the other hand, with a 230/228 you will be able to see 360 hp or maybe a few more without tuning or an intake but not much more, it will definately be good to build upon and make lots of power eventually.

I'm not here to discourage you into buying a cam or even a BIG cam... but I have a couple of buddies in the same situation and they aren't very happy b/c they went and bought the cams before they had the intakes and tuning and stuff(and one even bought the cam before he even had headers) and they aren't very happy at all. But then again you might buy an intake and not be happy.

Thats just my .02 cents.

I guess I already have Edit so I'm not affraid to tune and I was under the impression that a M6 had an easier time getting a good idle. I guess I figured I'd do the cam and get a good amount of power and then get even more when I do an intake.. but if I do an intake I am looking at like 12rwhp maybe for about 450.... I'm looking to take a pretty healthy step up now (>40) and then tap the full benefits by doing the intake etc later... My throttle body is already ported out (but was not in my sig)

TR224/224 112LSA was a good cam. It idles @750-800RPM AC off and 900-1000 with the AC on. Doing it again however, I would have gone with a 227/224 on a 110LSA or a 230/224 on a 110 (TR230/224 111LSA would work). The 224/224 112LSA ran out around 6000-6200 (still good for 400-410rwhp through a M6 and 3.73 10 bolt) and didn't have enough "bad idle" (I want ProStock idle on my car ).

231/237 would fit in where you want...good power, streetable w/ tune, peaks @ 6300
