Default Cylinder Chipped? Ok for use?

First of all let me intro myself because I am a brand new member. Wes is my name and I am about to venture into the world of building a engine.

I ran across a bare block that I am looking for. The guy is asking $400 plus giving my all the extra parts he has for it. Heads, crank, engine stand, blah blah. He says one of the cylinders has a chip in it. He stated is was away from the actual stroke of the piston. He supposedly took it to a machine shop (Car Quest in TN) and they said it would be ok with a little work.

However, I figured I better ask you guys instead. I will attach a photo. Please let me know what you guys think about it and can it still be used. I will try to answer as many questions as I can from what he told me. Thanks

What are you trying to do and in/to what? I think I would call that a "chunk" not a chip.

If the piston doesn't get down that far, it will probably not cause any issues..but I don't known what block, pistons, crank(stroke) you have and are planning. Others would need that info I think to help you.

I would be mostly interested in how that happened, and how you know that whatever caused that didn't cause other issues. Some cracks and other damage aren't readily visible with a naked eye. Depending on what you are attempting, that may not be that good of a deal, chunked or not.. I've got a great running 5.3 I am upgrading to LS2 that I will be pulling next weekend that wouldn't sell for much more than that. Not trying to sell you but giving you an idea of price/value.

Good luck.

smooth out any rough edges, and make sure there are no raised points, and it should be ok to run with stock stroke crank.

however that still leaves you with a weak point there, strong potential for a stress riser. Also, there may not be much material remaining to the water jacket.

I'm interested to see what others have to say on this one.

It is a bare LQ4 block. I held out that info because I wasn't totally sure I was in the correct forum

I am wanting to build a "beefy" 6.0L (with boost in mind) for my Tahoe. I am having a hard time finding this particular block so I may be over desperate. Thanks for your input. This looks like a possible disaster waiting to happen.

Personally, if it were me, it sounds like you plan to sink some cash into the block and I would find another block as there is no need to accept one with damage. If you were slapping together a motor to run for a year or two until you could afford something, that might be different. Buy why spend all that time, effort and money on something that has issues right out of the starting gate.

I agree with vettenuts.

Blocks & complete engines are out there so I would keep looking.

If he would lower the price it might be worth it just for the extra stuff. That chunk had to go somewhere so I would inspect any parts for damage first though.

Good luck.

I would be worried about there being more damage than what meets the eye. Stress fracture of something like that wouldn't be good at all.
