Default bent pushrod by hand..

Torqued rockers down, in middle of rotating engine by hand to retorque them, and SNAP.
Rocker arm came off intake valve cyl #3
Pulled push rod out....was bent.
If it matters, I was rotating engine counter clockwise.
Anyone know whyy?
Thanks

Maybe the lifter spun in the bore? And wedged itself.. That's why it wouldn't compress

What size pushrods?

Unless you used a PR way too long, but that doesn't explain why the others are fine

Stock pushrods. I put the bent one back in there and pressed on it, and felt tension. Is this just the lifter?

And now with a bigger problem, stuck a magnet in there to get response from lifter, and the tip of magnet got stuck on the lifter and magnet broke. This is my day... Depressing.

I'm wondering if you somehow managed to rest the pushrod on the body of the lifter.

That would be odd, the tip of the rod is a ball.

A little force should have seated it inside the lifter cup

Is the cam in timing correct? I am wondering if the piston hit the valve?

I agree, but I have seen weird stuff happen before. I guess I should be asking what the OP was trying to fix in the first place?

I was just rotating engine over 180 degrees, then was going to retorque rockers down.
All in all, I'm going to to jump off the face of the earth.... I forgot to put my rocket trays back in.... They were sitting in oil in the back of the garage...oops.

No more working on hungover Sundays!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for advice guys and excuse my stupidity for today

Is there a chance the pushrod wasn't seated in the rocker? This could increase the lift and then cause that one valve to hit the piston. You may have a bent valve it if did hit so if you need to pull the head to get the magnet, check the valve on that cylinder as well.

At least you only bent a pushrod. If you would have started the engine without the trays you could been a lot worse off.

I will find a rod magnet to try to pull magnet out today after class.. Hopefully all goes well. That magnet is STUCK on the lifter like glue

It was seated in the rocker just fine. Just didn't have rocker trays installed *facepalm*
Blonde moment for me

No need to worry about getting that magnet out until you get the head off. Then just pull it off the lifter.

Why would I need to pull head if I can get magnet out? (Not saying I will get it off) but its worth a try. Long pick and a better quality magnet

Because you can't install those lifter trays you forgot without removing the heads

I thought he meant the things that go under the rocker arms in the heads, on top of the rocker mounts. he had started another thread where he was asking if it was possible to change the cam without pulling the heads, so I'm guessing he didn't pull the heads.

Oh maybe your right, he must mean the aluminum rails the rockers sit on..

I was confused when he said "tray"

Which is another weird thing since the rockers sit in the rails pocket.. After torquing one rocker down it should be obvious that something is missing..

But that should explain why he bent a pushrod and probably did more damage, I would pull all the pushrods and roll them on a flat surface and make sure they're all flat still..
