Crank Thread cleaner?

Default Crank Thread cleaner?

Does anybody know of a good crank thread cleaning tool? I didn't see anything on ARP's site.

My crank threads are a bit mucked up, and I'd like to clean them before I go to town installing the balancer...

You can cut a groove up the threads of an old bolt and use it as a thread chase. I do that all the time and it works really well and it's cheap lol

I was considering that, since I'll have a spare GM bolt laying around...

But I was hoping somebody made a more official version. After cleaning my head-bolt threads with the ARP chaser, it became very clear cutting a groove doesn't clean everything.

ARP's 11mm head bolt cleaning tap is $45, I'd hate to see what their 16mm tap would go for. Of course, that may be a more common size that can be had at a supply store...

I think I found an Irwin tap that might do the trick... But I'll need to find an extension

I would be concerned with running a tap because that thread class in the crank is not known and a different class tap would take out material.

Yea, I did a little more research into taps vs chasers and that was the general consensus.

I emailed ARP on the off chance they have something that'll suit my needs.... Otherwise I'll just go with the custom cut bolt.
