Default Can This Block Be Saved? 4.250" Stroke LQ9 Build Thread

Doing this right now; real time.

I picked up a damaged LQ9 to see if I could repair it. The #2 piston came apart and broke the rod in half. The bore was scored up pretty badly:

I got it in the boring bar this morning and just took the first pass through at 4.005":

I'm thinking at 4.060" or 4.065" it'll be okay. Anyone wanna guess if it'll be ok or not?

Should Clean up. If not, a sleeve wouldn't hurt anything...

Miss seeing stuff like this since SAM.

Looks like it will make it, but hard to tell thru a pic on a screen

Yeah this is just for fun for me nowadays. I just enjoy it. I don't even need this for any of my cars, I just wanted to see if I could save it.

Since you dont need it for anything what would it cost me for you to take it out to .065 on all holes and send her to Pa? I would have voted no if i saw this before you finished though. As already stated i miss seeing actual work like this on the forum, keep it up

I'm probably going to hang on to it for a little bit, maybe even put it together as a stock stroke 375, or even a 4.10" stroke 427. If I do want to sell it, I'll let you know and probably sell it cheap. Shipping might be pricey though.

[QUOTE=93Polo;18981280]At what point do LQ9 blocks need to be sonic checked. Anytime you're thinking about .030 or bigger? I have one that needs a sleeve in #5 for the exact same reason except there is a crack in the cyl along with 4 deep grooves from the wrist pin. I did sonic check on some good cyls And found all are very thick (.245" average) except between cyls. front to rear, there they average about .135" which is not very thick at all. This is the 2nd one checked and both average about the same. .030" is said to be safe on these blocks. Pour the water jackets with ROCK BLOK to the water pump holes and bore away, then .065" is no problem because you'll still have over .090", the suggested min. from Their tech line.

I think it depends on what you're doing with it. I took another 6.0L block to 4.065" and stuffed LS3 rods and pistons in it and it's running perfectly fine in my Trans Am. For mild heads/cam street builds, I don't think sonic testing the cylinders is really needed at all.

If you want to do a power adder, then it may be a good idea to see what you have to work with. I don't know that I would want to use a .060" over block on a 1000whp nitrous build.

Nice save!

I vote to use a 4.8 crank and do something different.
