LQ4 or LQ9 BUILD
Looking to build an engine based on the LQ4 or LQ9 not sure which to get it will probably be a budget build but looking for some inputs and info. im new and looking for some guidance looking for a 500 hp. I am new to this sorry!!!!!!
both engine are the same. only difference is the LQ9 has higher compression. If your going to build the block then it doesnt matter which you choose cause you will be adding new internals. You could however save money on buying LQ4.
I have a grand total of roughly $5000cnd so not sure where abouts taht puts me i can get an lq4 for roughly $1400
dont quote me on this but i have been told they are not the same. the LQ4 has a slightly different crank (longer from what i have researched) and you cannot use it with a manual (a t56 anyway). but in your case you should be fine...

I wouldn't pay more than about a $400 premium for a LQ9 vs. LQ4 because that is about what it would cost to get 243/799 core heads to get the compression up on a LQ4.
A $5000 budget wont go too far depending on how ready the car is for the motor. Is this an already LS based vehicle with boltons or is this a retrofit? Signature helps us help you.

The 99-00 Lq4 had the long cranks. The others are the same as the LQ9's.
Both the LQ4 and LQ9 can be made with whatever compression you want them to be. Just figure out what compression ratio you're shooting for and mill the heads accordingly. It will also be contingent on what head gasket you choose to run.
That sounds great when you say it, but the more you mill, the less room you have for a good sized camshaft.
