What springs for the G5X3 cam???
I have looked at a couple of sites on valve springs, but I don't know if machining is gonna be required for my stock heads to get them to work? I have a 98 TA with the TR224 cam, I am buying a used G5X3 cam and need to know which ones to use, I saw that REV #VS1116, Crane #144832, and Manley #221426 make springs that can handle upto a .625 lift, but will I need to machine the seats to get them to work? I am looking at these for Budget reasons.

Most of the people I know who went with the G5X series of cams went with dual springs such as crane and comp offer.

the retainers usually dont work for other springs... need new ones!
I would use the Comp 921s... thats ALL I use on my customers cars... I had a guy switch from the Cranes to 921s as well, so seems like people like them

918's will crumble under that cam, don't use them, only good to .600 lift by the way. I went with the 921 which Lou uses with the cam, and they work great. They have enough seat pressure for the cam and everything. It's up to you though, I didn't want to go with the Comps initially for the cost involved, I wanted the Crane's dual spring, but they were national back ordered, so I bit the bullet and got the 921's, no regrets, they are a great spring.
I don't know about any machining neccessary with the 921's anyways. Not sure if the '98's have problems, but my '99 fits perfectly.

What about the other springs I listed, the REV and the Manley's, will they work and do they require machining, I am starting to lean towards the "GOLD" ones from Patriot Performance cause of cost.

Rev's I say NO, just not that great from the reports of breaking, etc. Don't take the chance, I talked to Thunder about them, they don't like them either, they prefer the Comp and Cranes. Never heard about the Manley's, I stay stick with either Patriot (Never used them), Crane or Comp.

Do I have to do anything special to get the "GOLD" ones in, like machining ( can U tell this is my biggest concern ) and will the retainers from my TR224 cam work (to help drive cost down, I told u this was a budget deal )

The retainers won't work from a single spring. The retainers are larger for the dual springs, just get new ones for the correct spring and sell the old ones, people snag them up FAST! Don't cut corners brother, you will pay out your *** in the long run and wish you just bought the right stuff.
The 918 retainers were MUCH different than the 921 retainers, just so you know.

you can use a 918 spring on that cam with no problem, comp runs them on cams that have XER lobes and .615" lift all day long...but I love the way Terry has an unbiased opinion.....

I just think the 918's wouldn't hold up very long to the X3 abuse, plus the single spring, err, no comfortable with the aggressiveness of the X3, dual spring all the way. Which ever brand floats your boat
