I drive my Vette in a lot of circle tracks also so adding that extra weight to the nose of the car was not an option to me. I had people tell me that they could tell the extra weight was there during hard braking, etc.
My 395 will make 500rwhp easy with the right setup but it prolly is about 25hp less than a similar 408.

I still say you can get most of that weight off the nose to offset the iron block. I have removed most of my weight off the nose and I could still remove more. Yesterday I found out what a street 408ci can do.. 563rwhp/518rwtq!!! Mind you this is a street setup. Not an all out Hydraulic Cammed 408ci like I could have went with. I could have gone LS6 heads and picked up more horsepower and I could have went with a bigger cam to gain more. I honestly believe 585rwhp plus is capable with a 408ci. Will a 383ci do the same with similar ride qualities? Hell will a 383ci be within 25rwhp of my current #'s with my cars same characteristics?

You can offset the weight of the 408 pretty easily and if you are hardcore you can more than offset it. All I did was relocate the battery remove front bumper support, air system, various plastic peices, windshield washer resevoir, hell even headers are lighter than manifolds with cats. My car feels no different now than what it did handling wise with the aluminum block and I do not even have a lighter k member or a arms. I also agree with Vince in that a 408 can make a good amount of more power than a 383, it can also safely rev higher and you don't have to worry about sleeves.
One thing that did sway me to the 408 is when I learned my heads were so screwed. Iron or aluminum the shortblocks are the same price, but when I also needed heads I figured I may as well get the iron for more power and rev.

If you wanted to... Can you slap on a S/C with no problem? Rather it would be a 383 Alum. or a 427 iron? Or would you have to plan ahead and lower the compression? Trying to learn here..
