Well I've got a gunked up 4.8 I picked up for $200 and I'm about to put together a half-*** engine run stand. Maybe I'll try it. Sounds scary but hey if it comes out squeaky clean and I'm about to change bearings, rings, pump anyway..

How long did you run it for? Driving or just idling? Did you change the oil several times after?

100 miles of driving, or you can idle it out of gas, either way. Cut open the filter afterwards, you will be blown away by the amount of stuff it will get out.

Do you fire it up? I can see ATF providing some sort of lubrication but not nearly as much as motor oil, not to mention its viscosity is equivalent to water.

Yes? ATF is roughly equivalent to 20wt.
