Default Rust patch on cylinder wall

So I got my heads in today and pulled the cylinder head to find......a dime sized colony of rust in one of my driver's side cylinder walls. Guess I'm taking it to get machined?

How long did that thing sit? The pitted top of the pistons look like they've been subjected to detonation too

I bought it as a pull out w/89k miles, so I don't know. Looks like I'm going forged

I just tore my LQ4 down today and found the same thing in a couple of the driver side cylinders, but #1 was much worse. It had water sitting in it for a while even though I was told it was a fresh pull out with about 175k on it. The machine shop is going to try a .001 hone and see what it looks like. So yea, I would get it machined to get that out of the wall.

The pistons looking like that ruin making it worth trying to hone it and run it.

If the circumstances didn't involve that ugly piston, I'd at least try to hone it and see how it works out.

If the shop says its still worth honing/using the block it's going to get forged Pistons/rods and new bearings. This is such a blow, hoping a hone will be enough at this point. It's a rough patch.

Well regardless, I'm sure that can be bored out and be used if you are already accepting the idea of forged rods/pistons.

I'm hoping it doesn't need sleeved. Maybe I'm just being a pessimist; I've heard there isn't much to shave off these blocks

Actually you can shave quite a bit, so you should be fine. I don't like going over 30 on any engine that's used for street use due to possible overheating issues.

I know it can be done, but I've normally had issues going over 30 on the street.
