Default Noise at start up. Lifter?

I know, here is another lifter or piston slap thread.

I'll keep it simple, tick coming from the dirver side of the block. Lasts no more than a minute and goes away. It sounds like an underwater tick?? Has a tad bit of a whistle/whine to it. And it speeds up with the revs. Car has been on and out of service for the past 2 years, so it sits a lot. LQ9 226/230.

Getting her ready for new trans, TC, and tune. I don't wan't to waste money for a tune if heads have to come off...might be an excuse for an upgrade.

Is this something I should be worried about. Does the head need to come off?

Appreciate the help.

Thanks

Id be worried about it sounds like a failing lifter. That knock you here is the lifter crashing into the cam.

Here is mine doing the same thing.

Caused complete engine failure redone the whole engine. But I didnt shut it down quick enough. Dont rev yours or even start it anymore till you atleast pull the valve covers and check for loose rockers while turning it over with the crank bolt.

That is a lifter and not piston slap.

shoot. I've been turning it on here and there and driving it a block or two. Pulled the head covers off and nothing seamed loose, cranked it over with no spark and didn't notice anything wrong.

I was hoping it was not going to be a big deal.

Try a 1/2 quart of trans fluid in the oil and see if it goes away.

If you can get the plunger unstuck in the lifter then you may be okay. But I wouldnt be getting on it too much while its tapping.

how would the lifter get unstuck? I assumed because the tapping went away after a minute that It wasn't a big deal.

First time I noticed it, after picking it up from my transmission guy, I drove it back 20 miles, trans is still acting up so it's been sitting for a while. But didn't think much of the tapping.....until now.

I did read somewhere that it could be a loose converter bolt. Might try that Monday. Keeping my fingers crossed

You can get it unstuck possibly by doing what I posted previously or you can ignore my post.

Loose converter bolts don't make that noise. If they are loose you will have a vibration...ask me how I know. I just got done retourqing mine with loctite.

I think you should listen to what kinglt-1 told you about the trans fluid. That is not a loose converter bolt. I will also say, ask me how I know.

Thanks for the advise. I'm worried if the lifter is collapsed that it can turn into a much bigger problem.

Think I'll pop drivers side head off and check out the lifters.

Apprediate the advise

Has anyone thought about a small exhaust leak. When the motor heats up it seals?

Had that happen to me with the exhaust leak. Found the leak on the header gasket underneath where you can't see. I thought for sure it was a lifter tick.
