ARP Head Bolts too long

Default ARP Head Bolts too long

I have a pre 04 6.0 iron block and milled heads .030

The other day after cleaning the holes I installed my new ls9 gaskets and arp bolts for the pre 04 block. torqued to 75 ft lbs. I noticed on a few bolts when releasing off the wrench after torque was hit the bolt head rotated back like I was twisting the shank of the bolt. I knew this was not good.

So it seems to me the bolts are too long I guess i could grind of an 1/8th of an inch or so. I know the head is not clamped down because the cylinder wall lube after turning the engine over has seeped out onto the rubber ring on the gasket close to the bore this was noticed after taking the head back off and they were put on dry. I done both sides this way.

What are your thoughts?

Do you have the washers under the head of the bolt?

Yes everything is as it should be other than the end result has the bolt locking up. I went ahead and bought new gaskets and i work it all out this weekend I guess my issue is not very common I will figure it out one way or the other.

Are the bolt threads hanging up inside the bolt holes in the block...?

I would recommend double checking that there is no debris or coolant down in the bolt holes. That can definitely cause some resistance and worse case can end up cracking the block when it tries to compress the liquid down in the bolt hole. As for the bolt being too long its possible, but I've never had that issue using ARP on the LS stuff on the correct block.

Also some 04 blocks have the new bolt pattern.

If you had the wrong bolts you would certainly know the difference. It's over 1 inch or more if I recall.

The fact that you said about 1/8 made me question if the washers are missing.

I always use the ARP thread chaser to clean the holes and often find stuff towards the end of thread in the block. Even New block's occasionally have issue's and require a clean up pass with a chase.

I agree with 1fastbrick. Double check if you have anything at all in those head bolt holes. Stick a twisted up paper towel in there to see if you can soak anything up. Also, I usually get in there with an air nozzle that I stick a straw on the end of. Stick the straw in the hole and blast all the debris out of there. If there is water in there those bolts will dead stop.
