Default MS4 Cam

I'm new to the forum, looking for some people that have personal experience running this cam good, bad and dyno results? I have read some pages and only seen a link from superchevy which they did a build and gained peak 82hp at 6400rpm with just a cam swap, really impressed me.

Pretty solid cam. Search this site, lots of people have ran it. Tsp just recently redid that cam to soften up the harshness on the valve train.

There is more than a couple Ms3 and 4 cams on this list. Its all about the whole set up.

And most of the other cars have pretty similar cams too 🤔

I ran it, wouldn't ever consider it again. If the car touches the street I'd get another cam.

Why would you say its only good for dyno numbers and not good for "real racing"

Good cam for the track, not so good for a street.

I have a MS3 in my ls2, buddy has one in his ls1 and we both love them. Maybe its because we have really good tunes on our cars, but they drive great on the street, even though our cars are toys/not daily drivers.

I've had it and just had a really good tuner and I'd drive it everyday no problem

Some people are simply more tolerant of large cams then others and that is fine. I don't care how good the tune is, you can only do so much with a cam that has 20+ degrees of overlap. They are so inefficient around idle and have lots of reversion that there will always be some negative effects on how it drives. If you have the proper supporting mods they can be tolerable for a weekend street car but it's something I would ever recommend for somebody that wants a driver. I think most would agree with this.

There is no luck needed. Nothing wrong with a big cam if you are willing to except some drivability trade offs and willing add the correct supporting mods. Biggest mistake I often see with large cam setups is not running enough stall/gear and not spinning the engine high enough in the rpm to make use of the larger cams power range. If you want a MS4 then plan on...Fast intake, a 4400 stall if Auto or 4.56 gear if manual, shift it at 7200 rpm, and it will fly.

Just because a big cam is tolerable on the street doesn't mean the car wouldn't be as fast or faster with a smaller cam if you don't have all the supporting mods, weight reduction, etc needed to make the big cam shine.

Big cams need a lot more attention to detail and also the willingness to let them rev. If not done correctly a much smaller cammed car will flat embarrass the big cam car.

I just say this because every time I see a post about a bigger cam everyone makes fun of it or says some smart comment. The thing is I know slot of people DD their F-Body but there's a handful of us that want max performance for track and maybe weekend use. I tried to ask questions a few month ago about bigger cans for nitrous and got no where. I drive my car about a 1000 miles a year if that and plan on racing it at least ten times this year.

I think that is because over the years there have been many big cam threads come up where the OP wants that BIG CAM sound but does not want to put in the effort that it takes to make it work...so you end up with a setup that is slower then a bolt-on only car.

I love larger cam cars when done right. This past fall we installed a Cam motion 244/252 110 LLR in my brothers 383 LT1. Its a 11:1 LPE ported stock casting heads/intake 6 spd car. Moser 9" 4.30 gear, Kook stepped headers and TD exhaust. It had a 230/236 114 hydraulic in it before which sounded milder then my little 224/228 112 346. After the cam swap it flat out sounds ******* violent. Makes my dads Shaferoff 434 sbc in his 70 nova with a 244/250 SR sound mild. That being said, even setup right it still does not like rpm's under 2500 and wants to idle around 1100rpm which is fine for a car that only sees 1000 miles a year.

tberg725,

Welcome to the site man. What are your goals for your ride? You looking for a killer sounding cam or a killer performing cam or a good mixture of both?

No kidding, I was told how my cam choice wouldn't work and it wouldn't make torque until 5k. The car is easy to drive, idles at 850, runs 10's on motor and 9's on 150 shot. I would say call tsp, ljms, btr, or any of the other cam guys and go with the one you feel the most comfortable with.

Spend the money on good heads, fast intake, keep the cam around 230 on the intake duration, and you will hit your goals.
