Buying a cam, what do you think of this choice?
So we decided to do a cam swap to use with nitrous. Comp cams recommends a XFI RPM XR277HR. I asked for something that would be noticeable with sound and this is what they told me, what do you think?
P/N 54-418-11
224/228 @ .050
112 LSA
RPM Range 2000-6800 (even though our trans shift at 5500)
I have a LS6 intake manifold, underdrive pulley, LT headers and free flowing exhaust, 4spd automatic.

Pat Guerra will do a far more comprehensive job of matching a cam to your application than Comp ever would.

No. That's not a good cam. Sounds like you're going to keep the stock stall and not increase the RPM range? Is that right? Or do you want to upgrade the converter as well? What rear gear?
Also, how much nitrous?
Daily driven?
What headers? Exhaust? Intake manifold?
Etc. etc.
Need more information.

Usually only driven on the weekends or to the occasional car meet or drag strip.
Current Mods:
-LS6 Intake manfiold
-SLP LID
-Pacesetter Longtube Headers with a y-pipe
-Free flowing exhaust, no converters
-25% underdrive pulley
Mods I am going to add:
-Cam obviously
-150 Wet shot Nitrous.
-3400-3600 Stall
-And a dyno tune after its all installed.

You want the right cam for your set up. We can help you figure that out. I assume the only reason you have 5500 as the shift point is because there is no tune. Anybody who recommends a camshaft based on your setup will no doubt mention you have to get a tune. The tuner can reset shift points based on your intake and RPM range.

As many have said already there's no point in going to a large camshaft without changing your shift points. 5,500 is very low for most cars making your power and running your planned combination. Most larger cams will shine ABOVE your planned shift point. Is there a reason that you don't want to go above 5,500?

98 White TA,
Pat G, Ed Curtis, WS6 Store can all Spec a nice cam for your application and I would listen to any of them over most of Comps Cam Monkeys. Actually, I'm amazed you got a reply out of Comp.
I'm still waiting on Comp to reply to my custom cam request. It's been several months.
Just by replying anyone could do a better job than Comp did with my request.
I usually defend Comp when they are unfairly derided but on this topic I'm tossing Comp Cams under the bus.

We have felix in the back shop wittle ours out of hickory. ;-)
We do normally use comp for our custom grinds as they have such a large selection of cataloged lobes etc. They are usually pretty close from specs to as ground.
We can use cammotion, crane, lunati, tsp as well.
I like to add in lift, so sometimes our grinds arent for internet readers so to speak. If you want a cam from the professionals trust the professionals. There is no need to spend extra money on custom cam Specs either.

With that said, I would recommend that you consider the Cam Motion Titan 4 LS1 or Titan 5 LS1 camshafts. These camshafts are a good fit for your stall and will deliver more power. In addition, our advanced lobe design is renowned for their smooth, quiet operation. This can make for a much more enjoyable driving experience.
Here are a couple examples:
TITAN IV LS1
The Titan 4 LS1 with a 3000-3500 converter and stock to 4.10 gears. This combo is very drivable, makes great midrange power and has a mild to moderate lope/chop at idle. This camshaft can handle up to a 200 shot no problem. This setup has excellent balance. The Titan 4 is our most popular street performance camshaft:

TITAN V LS1
The Titan 5 LS1 with a 3500-4000 converter and 3.73-4.10 gears is a very aggressive street setup for the LS1. This combo still have reasonable drivability, great midrange to upper RPM power and have a strong lope/chop at idle. This camshaft can handle up to a 200 shot no problem. This camshaft is very popular with the aggressive daily driver enthusiasts.
