Hi everyone, I assembled my ls1 short block yesterday, everything went very smoothly, new bearings, and arp main studs.

the only heads I have laying around are a set of 317 with new btr .660 duals that I was planning for my turbo 5.3 build.

now, I'm still following through with that project, but I'm assembling this ls1 for a restomod restoration.

I also purchased a new ls6 cam from JEGS...i know I know, i could of easily gotten a nice big cam but I wanted something that would sound stock because I don't want the rumble of a 112 LSA cam to draw people to words the motor, I want them to appreciate the details that I'm putting into the car.

so my questions: how much compression will I loose with the 317s on the ls1? Will it pull hard?

running 3.73 gears through an auburn posi and tr6060 6 speed tranny. Vic Jr intake manifold, 93 octane fuel. Car will be full weight; around 4200ish

thanks
Cpp control arms and qa1 shocks

The build thread is under LS conversions if you're so inclined to see the details

Resto-mod is a massive effort and expense. My 91RS Camaro had one. I would never have been happy with unless the engine for the best heads that fit my budget for the project. That was TEA hand finished LS6 Stage 2.5 with the NOS port.

I think you will regret the 317's unless your planning forced induction later or want to run 87 pump gas. I would want the extra compression from alternate heads for mpg and hp.

An excellent set of 241 LS1 heads are do able for about $1200 or less. AI even has a high compression version.

Stock 243/799's could be had for about $400 and the BTR springs kit could be used on them to keep cost down.

This motor isn't permanent, it's just to daily drive for a bit, while I build an ls3 or another big cube ls

I'd spend the $80-$100 and have the heads milled .030 - .040" to get the chambers down to around 65cc. Those 71cc chambers are not going to make that engine the most responsive NA setup.

do you think I'll have any piston to valve clearance issues with that small ls6 cam?

If it's a stock LS6 cam there should be no problem due to it having minimal overlap.
Anyone correct me if I'm wrong....

ls6 cam you should be fine as far as ptv w/65cc heads; just make sure you check for clearance. harbor freight sells dial indicators for under $20, checker springs on summit for like $10.

With a factory cam, you should be fine. 243s are around 64-65cc.
