Time For a New Cam, best option?
OK so this past wednesday my car began to have a slight tick coming from the engine so I drove it thinking maybe bad gas knocking or exhaust leak. Well it kept getting louder and more aggressive so i decided its probably lost a lifter, bent a push rod, or bent a valve. Anyways i think its time for a new cam and was wondering what would be the best one? If it was a a small block ford or chevy i could pick one out easy but not with these newer engines. The car is 2000 Ls1 Trans Am M6 with 113k miles, its only got cat-back, a K&N intake, and stage three monster clutch. It is also daily driven about 60 miles round trip. Id like to get some of that old thumping sound but not really looking for major power gains. MPG i would like to stay close to the same if maybe 1-3mpg less. If anyone has advice id like to thank you already! Really need to oder it ASAP as i need my car back, a 12 MPG truck sucks driving that much!

If you want the choppy sound but similar gas mileage I'd throw in a cutout along with something like a 228 style cam. This way you'll have minimal overlap but it will chop with the cutout open, and gas mileage won't suffer bad. It's one thought....

That old school thump is overlap. It's really hard to get a lot of overlap AND good mpg without also ripping the heads off and milling for some compression.
For a basic install and go cam, I'd suggest cam motion titan 3 as a starting point. Titan 4 also good. Worth consider new lifters also

Thanks for the options guys, i know that overlap causes the more aggressive sound i just don't know what cams for an ls there are? This is my first LS and computer controlled car. i can build one heck of a SBF or SBC! And i pulled the valve covers and it looks like a broke one pushrod and bent three more, or well the previous owner did the damage i just happened to have them finish off! But ill keep those cams in mind as it will get one eventually! Probably towards the end of the year or next tax season!

For a basically stock LS1 the TSP 2224R or 224/228 .600/.600 are great daily driver cams.
The next step up would be a TSP 228R .600/.600 which would have nice power from 4,000 to 6,500.
If you decided to go with some longtubes you could step up to a TSP 228/232 .600/.600.
I would stay under a 228/232 unless you decide to go some with nicely ported heads.

This is our new high lift hot cam. Made 385/365 on an m6 car. doesnt need a stall or gears either!
Cam kit as installed is $515 or $585 with hd pushrods. Cam install kit is $60. Easy to drive, easy to tune, and alot of fun! Sounds like a much larger cam and doesnt kill you mpg either!
