Default Disassembled my first LS motor today

I was totally impressed upon tearing down my first LS motor today. It's a 5.3 from a 2002 truck with just under 200K. This motor would probably have gone another 200K. ZERO sludge or any kind of build up under the valve covers. No noticeable ridge in the cylinders and the crank is perfect. I called a buddy over that deals with LS stuff and he said its not unheard of but even he was impressed. Now its off to the machine shop. Going back with flat tops, a decent cam and 243 heads.

I hope so. Going in a 1965 Chevelle that currently has the original 195hp 283 2 barrel and powerglide. Hoping to double the power the car has.

If you need any help with parts for the short block or cam, we have the best prices over summit jegs and amazon also and are THE one stop shop for you for tech support, parts, and info as well!
We have the best prices on pistons, rings, bearings, timing sets, pumps, and the lowest prices on gasket kits and bolts.

Thanks and good luck on the build!!

With a fresh rebuild using flat tops and 243 heads, I doubt you will be even close to your intended Goal of having double the stock cars 195-Hp (400 Hp). With headers and a tune, you may see 350 crank Hp.

Flat tops and 243 heads should put you right around 310ish Hp with a fresh rebuild, equivalent to a L33 which has 243/799 heads and Flat tops. I would install a nice little cam since you will have it apart, such as a TSP 223/226 .600/.600 which works well with a 2600-3200 Stall, or a cam around there to hit your 400 crank HP goal.

With almost 200k miles, In my opinion I would replace your timing set with a LS2 style and Dampener, replace oil pump with an upgraded Melling 10295, do a CHE Bronze Bushing Trunnion Ugrade to your rocker arms, replace valve springs to work with your cam of choice, replace valve seals, replace all gaskets/seals/O-rings, replace the oil barbell with a Sac City Billet one, inspect and measure all bearings, inspect and measure main and rod journals, inspect deck and head surface for flatness. If you wanted to go a little further, you could have the 243 heads CNC ported for a 25-35 rwhp gain.

The guys over at the WS6Store can get you the needed parts in a kit to save some money as well.

When I tore into my 118k miles Gen4 LMG 5.3, it looked amazing. Cross Hatching on bores looked like it was just done, all bearings were checked and still with in "New" Specs, and so on. Just had some brown film buildup on the bottom end that wiped off. I have always used Mobil 1 Extended Performance Full Synthetic 5w-30 Oil and Filter and change it every 5-6,000 miles since I bought my truck in mid 2009 with 29,000 miles on it. As long as you keep up on your oil changes, and not abuse the engine, the LS will last you a long time.

We are on the same page. The only stock parts I'm reusing is the block, crank, and rods. I'm dropping the block off at the machine shop today to cleaned up and all bearings replaced. I am going with a cam really similar the TSP one you listed and will be running a 3000 stall. While I'm not going all out with a CNC port on the heads I am doing a full rebuild with upgraded valve springs and a mild port and polish.

Don't shed any tears for this 283. It's getting punched out to 301 with a big solid lifter cam and dual 4s. Going in a model A with a 4 speed and 4.56s. It will come alive around 4000RPMs and shifting at 8000. Built one like this several years ago and always regretted selling.
