Default Help finding out what my LS1 T56 came out of

Hey everyone.

Finally pulled the trigger and bought an LS1 T56 which will go in my corvette.

Wanted to ask for some help figuring out what I have. Ive read all the posts, but my 'derivative vin' doesnt seem to follow the conventions that I have found online.

The number I think im seeing (which I have found on both the engine block and trans) is 122114521...I think. Very hard to read, and wondering if one of those 2's is a Z, but just cant tell for sure.

Here are the pics of the number on the engine block and the trans.

Also found another number a little higher up that is laser etched too, so thought I would include that.

Thanks for the help figuring out exactly what I have and where it came from.

The first thing to narrow it down is what does the oil pan look like? That would at least narrow it down to F-body/Corvette/GTO.

I understand wanting to get precise information on what you have, what it's rated for etc. That said, I don't think it matters all that much in the case of the LS1. As far as I know all LS1's are roughly the same. Sometimes their factory ratings are a bit different, but they are all pretty close on the dyno. The main differences as I understand it come down to the intake and head castings.

This picture might help you narrow down the T56 to one of three categories based on what the tailhousing looks like.

Definitely has 241 heads.

One reason i was asking for details on what it came out of was for good ol California smog reasons. From what I understand, they will measure me from the year of the car the engine was removed from. I actually have no idea what it came out of, so thought I needed to know that.

This is a complete pull out, and I have the computer also. From what Ive read, I should be able to get both VIN and mileage from that, but have no idea on how to do that. Id love to know more about how I can pull that information from the computer.

The guy I bought it from said it was from a 2001 Corvette (clearly not a vette based on the trans...I thought all of the vettes had the torsion tube type trans).

So what Im thinking is that it came out of a 2001 F body. Ill jack it back up and take some pics of the oil pan.

It has a cable throttle. I will check the number on the intake.

GM stamped the VIN # on the back of the production blocks by the bellhousing of the transmission. It will be on the actual block and not the heads. You can google the VIN# and it should show you what it came out of.

I've looked everywhere, and there is no 17 digit VIN stamped on the block. After Googling this quite a bit, the consensus seems to indicated there is only a 'derivative VIN', which is 9 digits, laser etched on the block, which is what I posted in the pics. Thats all I can find.

I think it's very unlikely it's a crate motor.

You cannot get mileage out of a pcm, it is stored in the cluster of the car. 241 heads would be 00-02 fbody, or possibly 04 GTO. Thats all it could have came from.

Finally got this off the ground today so I could get a pic of the oil pan. Pan has part number that's not showing up in the gm parts site. 12558899. couple of old sites say it's an older part number for the fbody pan.

The pan isn't a 100% way to tell. Lots of LSx engines get F-body oil pans as they get transplanted into them. Lots of LM7's, LS1's and later engines end up in Firebirds and Camaros. You really want to get the numbers off the block itself. That's the only way to know for sure.

If you wanted to figure out what the ecu came out of, find out the part number for it and then find someone who has a vehicle that uses that same ecu. Then swap it into their car and just pull the tune using hp tuners. It will tell you year make and model and vin number. You could then cross reference that vin to the numbers you posted to get an idea if the engine is from the same car or not.
