Default Cam thoughts w/ Milled 243s

Ok... so some of you may have seen I was working on a budget build for my new motor... budget got even tighter than originally planned so power levels will def be lower, but I think I can still meet my mid - range torque goals.

I've got a rebuilt 2001 LS6 shortblock with king bearings, ARP bolts, and Mahle rings. Reman'd 243 heads milled .030 with .660 lift dual springs. I'm leaning GM MLS head gaskets with ARP head bolts, but I've been considering the Cometic .040. Regardless, I do not want to fly cut the pistons.

Anyway, assuming my TR224 (224/224 .56x/.56x 114lsa) is reusable from the blown motor... does anyone see any benefit going bigger considering the tight PTV, I don't imagine I can fit much more than the current cam anyway.

Torque goal is 350rwtq from 3000 to 6000 rpm. I called Tick last week to spec a cam, but haven't heard back. Thoughts?

How much compression are you looking to run?

Ill be running 93 Octane...so I think with the GM gaskets ill be around 11.2:1 the Cometics in the 11.5:1. I cant even begin to figure out the whole DCR thing... but I understand the benefits of the tighter quench on the Cometics which is why i was considering them despite the already milled heads.

Car will be occasionally street driven and will mostly be used for road course duty. HPDE and time trials... no actual racing. An autocross or drag race is possible on rare occasions too... but not the purpose intended.

Our high lift hot cam would be a good choice.
Cheaper than cammotion, quiet, and easy on valvetrain. no ptv issues. great idle.

Overall good cam. It should break 370tq no issue
Great budget cam and no need for expensive duals etc.

High lift hotcam package

With that high lift hot cam though... Will I really be over 350rwtq by 3000rpm?

As far as the titan 4... Think that will have enough PTV clearance?

I know I have to check regardless, just don't want to spend an extra $4-500 on a cam then find it I have to fly cut.

Titan4 will clear fine with a stock GM gasket. I ran an almost identical shelf cam from CM and milled 40 243s and had 70 and 90 on ptv and never kissed a valve in about 5 years running that combo.

That's great to know... the titan 4 or the BTR2 were definitely on my list as was the SNS2. Just stared to get nervous.

Oh I did... sorry... but my TR224 seems to already outperform that cam. I'm trying to decide if it's worth the money to invest in a cam bigger than my current cam considering my available PTV.

I'm not looking for peak torque... I'm looking for 350+ by 3000 rpm. The graph looked like it didn't brake 350 till after 4000.

All three of those are good choices. The SNS2 has a tighter LSA so the torque comes in early and hard. The BTR2 and T4 will drive a bit smoother than the SNS2. IMO the T4 makes the fewest compromises while still delivering the goods.

Personally, on a LS1/6 stock cubes, I find 227 duration on the intake to be right at the sweet spot. Much more and you start really sacrificing DD for performance. Much less and you're leaving power on the table.

I've personally run a 224/230 and then jumped to a 227/235, and it was a significant increase. I was able to hit 430 lbs of tq on the 227/235 through a 5.7 NA. In fact even the cam I have now, still only gets 436 lbs of torque and it's a solid lifter 237/245. Point I'm making is that in a LS1/6 street car, 227 on the intake is a really really good duration.

You treed me while I was typing. Seeing this, I'd consider the SNS2. The torque comes in earlier and harder - but you may end up fly cutting because 10 degrees overlap and the earliest IVC at 40.5 degrees.

I ran the 227/235-112+3 cam with no flycutting. Had 7 degrees overlap. Titan 4 has 3 degrees overlap.

That's great insight, thanks. Hmm...Titan 4 is starting to look like a good option. I think with my current cam... I'd be hard pressed to peak over 400rwhp/tq with my current setup.

Yeah. I mean I ran AM heads, EWP, fast102, 3" dual exhaust, light clutch, manual steering, and anything else I could throw at it. Not typical results for sure. But glad the data helped anyway

The graph is actually not a true indicator of the power it makes. also in that link youll see time slips where it picked up an honest 5mph. thats well more than what the graph shows.

But that was against a stock cam wasn't it? I was trapping 116-117s with my cam till I ran a 28" tire and still trapped 113s.

We can get nearly any cam and have quite a few on the shelf even. if you want a bigger cam we do have our high lift asa cam competitor that is a 226/236 .600/.600 110 that is a good step up and still has plenty of ptv. same price too. we use the pac1218 to stay on a budget with a good quality spring but you can use any other spring for .600+ lift also. Easy lobes with a quiet valvetrain too.

Now that's a cam i could be interested in... I've already got springs...what woukd the PTV look like on that cam vs the Titan 4?
