Default 113k Mile LS1 Build Questions

Hello all, I have a 2000 Z28 with a A4 & LS1 with 113k miles. I am wanting to add reliable and safe power and have been researching for a few weeks but I figured I would seek some outside opinions.

With 113k miles on the motor, what else would you get to support this list?
228R 228/228 .600"/.600" 110LSA Texas Speed Cam
3000 Stall

I would do a set of used LS6 heads also as I am trying to do this as cheaply as I can without risking my motor.

I am wanting to see what else I might swell do since I am doing modifications to a high mileage LS motor. Any and all help/inputs are appreciated! Thanks!

Sounds like fun! I would do new oil pump , cam will need upgraded pushrods and springs. Have you discussed your goals with Texas Speed? They are very helpful. Do you have long tube headers? There's always room to grow with a good set. Give them a call and be honest with what your goals are. Have FUN man!

Oh also probably should've stated that the motor is 100% stock. I haven't contacted Texas Speed but good though, I'll get right on that. Any specific type/brand of oil pump that you would recommend?

We all gotta start somewhere right? LOL. Plenty of options on pumps, I'm using LS6. What about air intake? You could watch the classified section on here for a used Lid, see them come up pretty often for good prices. It'll come together, planning is the key. Are you doing the installs yourself?

It honestly really depends, but I'd like to have it professionally done by a local shop I have inquired.

I have a K&N air filter in the stock lid.

If that filter is oiled, REMOVE IT! Put in a clean DRY filter of your choice. That oil gets all over the Mass Air Sensor, causes more trouble than its worth. I have a used SLP lid with a Wix filter, works for me. My engine is mechanically stock also. 135,000 still going strong.

Skip the LS6 intake and try to find used fast intake, hopefully you plan on doing headers and exhaust. I also urge you to look at a few other cams, EPS,BTR and Cam Motion come to mind.

I think I would skip the cam and first do the stall and long tube headers. In general, maximize your bolt-ons before going into the engine.

As to the LS6 heads - there's no risk. They fit the factory LS1 perfectly fine. Oil pump, go melling high pressure (don't need high flow pump).

I built mine at 140K, and when i pulled the heads, they still had the factory cross-hatching. These LS engines are unlike anything you're used to. 100K is just not a big deal to them.

That 228r cam is fine for auto it will need a stall. 2.73s wont like it much either.
Ls6 is a cheaper option.

Id use the tsp spring kit and prs.

We have the best prices on the rest of the parts like chain pump and gaskets.

Ive been looking at the QTP headers. Think they're a good buy?

I have not yet checked to see if I have 2.73s but I probably do. What problems would I run into keeping that gear ratio?

113 K Miles are Not what I would consider high miles for
A well taken care off LS Engine. My 1999 C5 with 151K miles
still runs perfect.

Darth gives great advice. Start with LTs,Stall,Gear & Tune,
Maybe 3.73:1 gears, depending on your existing ratio.
Great Bang for the Buck without affecting
Drive ability or Durability in a negative manner.
Let's you enjoy the mods and plan your
HCI package to come.

Yes, I agree with Darth on all points.

My 99TA has ~164,000 miles and runs great. 132,000 of those miles has been with a heads & cam package plus 4.10 gears - its really like almost 195,000 miles due to the 4.10 gears. The car basically runs the same as 15 years ago with 35,000 miles.

Bucking and surging at cruise and tcc locking and unlocking quite a bit. Loss of bottom en power also. Itll come alive after 3k but before that with 2.73s it would feel doggy.
Id think you have 3.23 tough possibly. Look at G codes on door

I agree, it's a good idea to start with the bolt ons and a good tune first. The 243/799 casting heads would be a good idea as well since they're an OEM upgrade.

I would defiantly find some 243 ls6 heads and then rear gears, then converter. Have a reputable cam company spec you a cam for your heads, intake, converter, and rear end. Long tubes aren't a bad idea either. Try to find a used FAST intake, rather than a ls6 intake if possible. It'll be a fun ride, that's for sure!
