Cam selection help
Guys I have an 02 camaro ss. 40k miles. Automatic, 3.23 gears. 1 7/8 longtubes. Fresh, unported 243 heads with btr 660 springs milled .010. Stock short block. Not planning on any power adder. I'm looking for cam recommendations. This is a street car that may go to the track once a year, BUT it's not a daily driver. Just a weekend street terror or at least I hope to make it. I want the choppy idle with decent street manners. I want good power under the curve, and not Just a high rpm powerband that begins at 5k. I'm planning on running a 3600-4000 stall converter. I really don't want to change rear gears or rearends, unless I break the 10 bolt on its rare trip to the drag strip. Probably will never see slicks. Help me cam my car correctly please. Thanks in advance!

As far as a cam.. The texas speed torquer cams would be a decent fit. Or a 228R to be a little on the milder and very broad power side. If you wanted to go to the bigger side a MS3 or 4 may be your thing. There's a lot of cams out there that seem to fit your criteria so it's pretty hard to narrow it to one. I listed 4 above and that's only from one manufacturer..
No porting for now. I would love to but it's just not in the budget. Would it be worth it to mildly hand port them myself? Just clean up the casting flash, smooth the exhaust ports, etc? I was originally thinking torquer v2 or v3, cam motion titan 4, etc. Something 230 intake, 234 exhaust 575-600 lift give or take. I'm not to concerned with valve spring life as I won't drive it many miles.
Titan 3 cam ---- 3.23 friendly
SNS stage 2 cam ---- may want 3.73
Tsp 228R ---- may want 3.73
Tsp 224R ---- 3.23 friendly
Streetsweeper HT ---- may want 3.73
ws6stores improved GM hotcam ---- 3.23 friendly
Lunati 277/283 ---- 3.73s
Lunati 272-278 ---- 3.23s
Id rock the 3200-3600 converter. Less heat and slip.
Gears are just a recommendation. I wouldnt run 228 and up cams with 3.23s personally. But you can.

Thanks for the mention though! It really does mean something to see it mentioned at least!
Titan 4, streetsweeper HT, SNS2
Since street manners is a concern I'd do the Titan 4. SNS2 pulls like a locomotive but takes effort to tune off idle more so than other cams in the thread that have been mentioned.
Ws6store Asa cam is in that same range too. I just have no direct experience with it.

I have a very similar build.... took it a lot further now than I had planned, and now wish I went just a little bit bigger... but with basically those EXACT specs and thoughts in mind when I started the build, I called Texas Speed they recommended the 228/232 .600/.600" 112+2 cam they grind. This cam has outstanding street manners and the curve almost immediately makes power around 3500 rpm and stays damn near straight line steady through 6000rpm. Idle is choppy as hell and I'm very pleased. You will definitely be happy with it.
Slicks are easier on the rear than radials, they're lighter and absorb more shock through their softer construction.

P.S best engine mod I've done smiles per dollar was a QTP electronic exhaust cutout. The car catches all the attention at cruise nights open cutout. It really amplifies the lope.
I came here to suggest exactly this. A TSP torquer for the choppy idle or a 228R for excellent street manners (114lsa). When I spent a yr here researching cams I learned a choppy idle sound comes from the valve overlap duration. Not necessarily the overall duration eg. no need for a massive t-rex cam for the muscle car sound. Also note a choppy idle leads to surge and misery on the street in traffic.

Our high lift hot cam has a good lope at idle and has -1* of overlap.
I've been researching the last few days trying to decide. Man what a tough decision. I think I have it narrowed down to the tick sns stage 2 torquemax, or the streetsweeper ht. Probably will go ahead and replace gears with 3.73s. I called tsp and they recommended the tsunami v2, but I think that's a little big for a street strip weekend warrior that won't see many drag strip days per year. If I get one of these smaller cams I think ill order the cometic head gaskets to bring the compression up to 11:1. If I go to a bigger cam in think I will run into ptv issues with milling or a thinner head gasket. I'm running the 243 casting heads unported with only a fresh valve job. The sns stage 2 for the ls2 looks good to, as well as the regular streetsweeper. Opinions?
