Default Can I get the heads off with head studs in place?

First time yanking heads off of any LS engine.

Car is a 2000 Trans Am. I have it down to the long block, ie; everything removed except the heads themselves. I see there are head studs, so just wondering if the heads will clear them for removal?

The studs can be removed if necessary.

The driver side will come off with all of them there. The passenger side needs a few towards the rear removed. Unless you don’t have a heater box anymore. But regardless you’ll have a majority of them come out with the nut still attached. Not a big deal.

Just be careful lifting off. With little clearance it is very easy to accidentally drag the head across a stud and put a good scratch in it.

So, so true. It's worth taking the time to remove the studs prior to lifting the heads off. If catch the slightest snag while halfway off with the heads, you can gouge up the head surface pretty easily. Take your time and remove the studs, please.
I learned the hard way on my GTO which has much more room for head removal. Once it was out on one side, the other studs remaining made it hard to slide the head back on without doing additional damage. Beer didn't help either lol.

Love the last sentence, lol...

I'm just waiting for the clock to tick away another hour or so, and then I'm yanking these Frankenstein ported Trick Flow heads off...Since they're just shy of 3 grand, I will remove the studs FIRST...well, technically 2nd...I plan to break the seal, lift the heads up a little bit, to let most of the remaining coolant run out all over the floor, so I can track it all over the place...then remove the studs and heads...

Question

FWIW, I was able to easily get both heads off without removing any of the studs. Had at least 2" of clearance.

Had a blow out on Cylinder #6. No damage to the head or block, according to my straight edge.

It HAD Fel-Pro PermaTorque MLS 1161L-053 gaskets on both sides.

I'm replacing them with GM, LS9 head gaskets

Any opinions on this particular gasket??

I will NOT be trying 22# of boost again, LOL...
Gonna cap it off at 10-12 and find out why my methanol stopped spraying...
