Default Lq9 Bent Rod

Opened up my cam only LQ9 and found a spun bearing and bent rod. Could I technically get away with a new rotating assembly and block cleaning?

If you can, post pictures of the crank and the rest of rods? Curious on how many other rods, bearings and the condition on the pistons?

Good kill.

That bearing looks too good to have “spun”. Partially trashed from running with the bent rod. However when they spin the rod Big end turns black and the crank journal gets wiped out.

What does the rest of the bearings look like? Wonder if you have other near spun bearings?

Whats your plans?

I’ll post some more pics tomorrow of the bearings!

As far as plans I’m not sure yet. Just wanna get back on the road. Just need some more info as to Whether or not I should send this to the machine shop? Oil pan was prerty clean.

That bearing doesn't look spun but would need to see the back side or the rod journal to be sure.

It looks more like it was damaged as a result of the rod bending. You could likely replace the bearings and damaged rods as long as there is no damage to the piston.

The rod looks like it was "hydraulic'ed". Cyl filled with liquid of some sort; fuel, coolant, water from a deep puddle, etc., then compressed. Looks to me like the bearing either was damaged in the event or by the misshapen rod afterwards.

There may be other damage in the motor besides just that one rod like that.

If it was mine, I believe I'd go looking for a motor core, and start over; rather than trying to guess what all else did or didn't get damaged, and take the risk of missing something critical.

Got home from work and found some carnage. Same bent rod.

Yikes! What does the bore look like that piston rode in? Somewhere in that sump is probably that missing chunk of piston too.

What caused the engine to hydro lock in the first place, That is what needs fixing first.. Just my opinion and 2 cents will buy a cuppa coffee.....

Found the chunk in the pan! The cylinder wall is a little rough to the tough. Not a big area. I guess I’ll be shopping for a new short block! Chances are the crankshaft is bent to.

Yeah that's pretty much smoked... a good used one is gonna be AHELLUVALOT more economical than trying to fix that one.

would you like my address ha, no really though, id take that block off of ya.. Everything looks fine to me, throw in a new piston, rod and polish the crank if needed, add bearings, and if the cylinder walls are scratched less than .004 hone it out, clean the block and it will be good, no over sized piston needed, and be able to take care of it all yourself.. BIG TIME

Piston broke more than likely, due to wrist pin bending when it hydro’d.
I’d personally throw a rod at it, and a set of hypereutectics. You can check your balance by comparing rod weights, and piston weights. Set of bearings, and go.
If it were me, I’d grab a set of injectors as well. Could have been a leaky injector that caused this mess to start with.

Read the posts immediately above; hydraulic lock is the suspected cause.

Hydrolock is correct! Still trying to find the cause. My guess is leaky intake during hurricane Irma. Car sat for a period of time. Gonna take the crank to the machine shop And see what we can do! So far journals all look good.
