Default LS6 fell in my lap....help me pick a cam

So I stumbled across a z28 that has an ls6 swap but "made a ticking sound". Showed up and it definitely sounded valve train related. 6 speed car but the guy didn't know much about it's history. Turns out it has full suspension and boltons...along with double valve springs with titanium retainers, so I'm assuming someone put a cam in it. Anyways, drained the oil and pulled a valve cover and the number 4 lifter is shot and lost some needle bearings. I'm assuming it needs a cam too.

I already have the SS in sig that I track even though it's a street car, but this car is more of the wife and I project car so she can drive it and learn more about tearing into a motor. It's a real ls6 with 243s ls6 intake lid long tubes etc etc. I want something that idles and drives GREAT, I do my own tuning so that's not an issue but I don't want to sacrifice any drivability. Max rpm will be 6500 and I don't want to sacrifice lowend.

This cam has me interested but haven't heard anything about it.

Thoughts or it other cam options? Looking for low overlap, like 2 degrees or less.

While that engine could easily take the Titan IV, IMO the Titan III is just an all around great cam. Will idle nice, drive well(near stock) and storm to that 6500 range you’re after being as you have the hollow valves

Thats a nice looking cam too, with 0 degrees of overlap. Anyone have experience with either of the cams suggested ? Open to others, but read enough that I want something ground by cam motion.

I would say put a stock cam back in it but you would be looking at turning it closer to 7k then

With light valves you should be looking for more rpm ....not less.

Damn those needle bearing out of the lifters ended up in the top of the head!!!! You should probably fix the rocker arm before swapping lifters maybe.

The tapping sound was the slop in the rocker from it bouncing when the pushrod would pop up when the lifter was at max lift....I'm DEFINITELY pulling the head. The pushrod was literally shorter than its neighbors from being beaten hahaha.

If there is still a roller on the lifter I'll go ahead and pull the other head too and do all 16 lifters since I don't know the history. If the roller on the lifter is trash and the cam looks jacked I'm pulling the motor and doing bearings at a minimum. Should be eventful and OF COURSE it's the passenger side.....but after seeing the mods and the shape of the body and interior, I got a screaming deal on the car.

I know the LS6 is a good cam, especially for revving and street manners. But I've had a LPE gt2-3 and loved it and have been tuning over the weekend on a 6 speed car with a Tick SNS torque max stage 2 and that was pretty nice too even though it's got like 7 degrees of overlap. I figure high teens low 20s duration and around 600 lift with a 113 to 116 lsa would give me more torque down low than an ls6 and pull just as hard while still driving close to stock. Wheres Darth at? I know he loves messing with cam specs, but typically it's max power stuff, I'd like to see what he thinks when the emphasis is on driving nice.

Both the Titan 2 LS1 and the Titan 3 LS1 are great choices for drivability. You cant go wrong with either.

Thanks, in memory serves you work for cam motion? Can you contrast the 2 cams and expected hp on a bolt on ls6?

Hey ddnspider, these two cams will have very similar personalities and powerbands in your LS6. The Titan 2 will have the smoother idle of the two, but both will be very mild. HP can vary pretty widely depending on the vehicle and dyno. I would expect between 380 and 410 with the Titan 3. The Titan 3 is about 10 hp stronger than the Titan 2. I have always said the Titan 2 is a no sacrifice camshaft. It is just better than stock across the board and drives just as good.

Thanks, that's the type of info I was looking. If the Titan 2 drives better and only gives up 10hp then that sounds like the ticket. This is just a fun street car to mess around in that we can drive when we want.

Motors coming out!!! Spent about an hour with the wife tearing the passenger head off and the suspect lifter would NOT come out of the lifter bore. Took my flexible phone borescope and snuck it in 1 of the windows to see if I could tell if the lifter mushroomed and......
goooooood cam lobe....

Baaaaaad cam lobe.....

So motors coming out....now to decide if it's a stock rebuild or swap in some forged Pistons etc.

Long as they still look good when it comes out I may go that route....just tempting to put forged stuff in it since it's apart and I love boost lol.

Its definitely silver cause the SS next to it in the garage is pewter. It's always been a FL car according to the Carfax. You in FL?
