Default Another Cam decision thread!

I'm sure you guys have seen this thread 1000 times, but I still want your input!

We'll start ito with the car. It's a 2000 Camaro SS, M6, stock 3.42s, SLP lid, ported throttle body, LS6 intake, TSP 1 7/8 long tube headers and off road Y-pipe.

The car is a semi--daily in the summer. I don't often sit in traffic or use my AC. Most of my driving is on country roads. I would love to have a nasty sounding idle, but ultimately I care more about a good performing cam, and I don't want to be fighting cam surge/bucking very often. Since it's a 2000 with the weaker rod bolts, I'd like to shift no higher than 6500 RPM.

The cams I have been looking at the most are BTR stage 2 & 3, and TSP Torquer V2 & V4.

At the moment I like the BTR stage 3 the best, it sounds nasty at idle and the dynographs seem to have a pretty fat torque curve above 3000 rpm, it is certainly on the larger end of the scale though. I also read that you can get your BTR cams ground by Cam Motion on 8620 cores (is this true?), so that's enticing as well.

Thanks guys!

I ran the the Torquer 2 on my old LS1 setup and really liked it. Sounded great and had good low to mud range power. I see youre in MI as well. Who will be doing your tuning?

Another suggestion for a cam in that similar size range would be the streetsweeper ht. It's not as recommended as other cams but works awesome. I ran it in my cam only setup and it's a proven performer that makes great power.

I was planning on Andrew Schnicke. My buddy had his C5 with a BTR stage 2 tuned by Cam at Port Sheldon, so that's a possibility too.

I'll look into the Streetsweeper HT also.

The street sweeper HT is an oldie but a goodie. Always made great power. you might want to check out the Titan 4 from Cam Motion. Great all around cam as well. It’s on a friendly 113 LSA as well. Good luck.

Agreed. I find that most of the shelf grinds in the 226-229 range on the intake from the various vendors are very good options. You almost get to splitting hairs when you start comparing between them. 227 is a great intake duration. Far more power vs stock, but not so big you start making huge compromises.

Thanks for the input, guys. Seems like tons of really good options.

Do you guys know much about the Cam Motion Titan 5 cam? I can't seem to find much about it, but I like that they use gentle lobes and it seems like it might be just a little bit more tame than the BTR stage 3.

Am I insane for thinking about a cam like the BTR stage 3 or Titan 5? Lol

Not at all insane. You'll make a few more drivability compromises on the off idle range, but they are good choices. There are guys daily driving larger cams than those

If staying with the stock gearing I'd stay more in the range of the cams that were originally listed. That's just my personal preference

The titan 5 is a great cam if your looking for something on the larger size. There is always a give and take to going larger. That’s actually really close to a cam I plan on going with this summer. Had a good conversation with Jacob(DarthV8r) and it’s what we came up with. Should rip. Thanks again.

That high lift ASA cam is a nice option too when paired with the right setup. Has produced some excellent results. I'm a Cam Motion guy, but I do love me some ws6 store.

If you want a really great camshaft for a stick car that both sounds great and drives great, our stick shift customers love the Titan 5:
http://www.cammotion.com/camshafts/t...232-238-113-4/

This camshaft had GREAT midrange torque and loves a 6500 shift point. It has a great sounding defined lope/chop at idle and should not buck above 1200-1400 at light part throttle. It will typically make about 450 RWHP on an average heads cam car.

Here is an idle clip:

Regarding 8620 cores, sure thats definitely true for a certain percentage of people. If I'm going through all that work for a cam swap, I just personally feel better putting in the best material available. Not speaking for others, just my opinion. I think it's cool that you offer core selections to the customer for the ASA grind. Sure it's more money, and possibly overkill on some builds. It all comes down to cost versus someones personal preference. I'm with ya though, that's a nice grind either way.
