Provide some sanity....Gen 3 vs Gen 4
I was all set to buy a kit from ws6 store to do a rebuild on my LS6, see cam thread here:
https://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-internal-engine/1892131-ls6-fell-my-lap-help-me-pick-cam.html
Just to be certain, I figured let's pull the pan and dig a little to make sure I don't need anything else before ordering. Well... It appears someone's been in this motor before. It's definitely an LS6 block...but it definitely has Gen 4 rods in it. From searching, you can't have Gen 4 rods without Gen 4 pistons. So I've got an LS6 block with gen 4 rods and pistons and what i believe to be an LS6 crank. When searching I can't seem to find a clear answer.....are gen 3 and gen 4 rod bearings the same? I know i need a new crank so trying to figure out my options right now and what I should be buying.
Looking around I can get a remanufactured ls1 crank with main and rod bearings for like 175, but can I even use the rod bearings? 2nd question is about piston rings. If we decide to replace them, is it just the factory 3.89x or whatever gen 3/gen 4 piston rings or are there differences. I can't seem to find people selling gen 4 stuff specifically so I'm confused. I build boost and tunes, not short blocks, so any help is much appreciated.

All LS rod bearings are the same.
The rings on ls1 pistons were standard rings and thats what comes in our kits. whether floating or pressed pin its the same ring set.
You can upgrade to a napier 2nd for a little more but be careful as alot of ring sets use a low tension oil and that is what helps agitate oil consumption and pcv issues. Our kit uses a std tension oil.
The 04 gto and 05 ctsv used that style ls1/6 setup with floatin pins. They also use the 2nd design head bolts and cam bearings. Also all gm reman engines from circa 2008 and up use the "gen4/2nd design" parts.

It should say press fit design will not work with gen4 rods.
Below you see an option for floatin pins. We thought that to be self explanatory but I will modify the description to help.
Like i said if you look at the complete rebuild kit and not just the pistons you wont see that.
This is us telling you the floating pin option will work with gen4 rods though. Or any other floating pin rod that takes a .945 pin.
We will be using these pistons in the iron 5.7 and the 5.1l short stroke with either gen4 rods or modified gen3 rods.

I'm considering pulling the motor that's in my SS and dropping it in the z28 that had the broken LS6. Since the LS6 has Gen 4 stuff, it should be pretty stout so I can turn the boost up on the D1SC.
