Default 6.0l build for autocross

A little background. This engine is going in a 3100 pound race truck which is solely purposed for autocross. I currently have a 5.3l and z06 cam and want more torque over a broad powerband.

enter a 6.0l short block. I have a spare set of 862 heads in a drawer. I know the intake valve and shrouding issue. I also have ls1 2" intake valve to throw in these heads. I plan to to a mild polish job have get a vavle job to cut in the 2" intake valves. Also sitting on the shelf is a nnbs intake and 87mm tb. I was planning a l33 build but i found a good deal on a 6.0 short block. Im thinking with a mild mill of .020 or .030 and sometging like a mild ASA cam i should have a decent motor. My main questions are can i mill .020 or .030 and be ok with an ASA cam? Is there a better budget friendly cam? Im building mainly from craigslist parts so used is my best freind. Thanks in advance.

I am guessing it is a LQ4 6.0l ? I think that combo would work nicely for what you want. If it is the LQ9 I wouldn't cut the heads that deep.

Im not sure which code it is. He says its from a 2011 pickup. What would be a decent amount to mill before i worry about ptv?

2011 from a pickup sounds like it is a L96. (info from Wikipedia)The LY6 is a Generation IV small block V8 truck engine with a cast iron block. It shares the same bore and stroke as its LQ4 predecessor. Like other Gen IV engines, it features variable valve timing. It generated 361 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 385 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm using "regular" gas, or ~87 octane. Redline is 6,000 rpm and compression ratio is 9.6:1.
Be aware this engine is a 58 tooth reluctor not a 24 like your 5.3l so the computer/harness will be different

Oh that is good info to know. I didnt evem think of the reluctor being different. So i need to stick with an earlier year block then. The torque numberd sound good though

Starting to get my parts lined up. Im going to reuse my batwing pan i modifed to fit my headers. A melling 295 pump for hopefully a little more pressure. Worked good for my 5.3l build. Ill add a oil pickup retainer piece for some added piece of mind.
engine will likely have over 100k on it. Should i worry about the bottom end at all if i plan to spin it to 7k? I do plan to replace the cam bearings. Is there anything else i should replace or just run it as is?

I love the sound of the asa cam, it's powerband comes on like a 2 stroke 250........I'm suprised nobody told you just to put the 5.3 crank into the 6.0 to solve the 58x/24× reluctor issue and change the timing chain gear to get back the cam sensor for 3rd gen

There's a few ways around the reluctor like running the pcm for the motor you buy, conversion boxes, swapping the reluctor itself on the crank, swapping cranks.. whatever it is I would want the gen 4 6.0 over the old one, less likely to need as much rebuilding etc and will come with either the newer cathedral intake or will come with square port heads and awesome intake. (I know you said you already have one) but the new stuff is better than the old and the gen 4 rods will be happier at high rpm

I think you're on the right track with the plans and I love the truck man

Tell us more about it though, auto or stick? If auto whats the stall? Gears? Do you mainly stick it in one gear around the track? What rpm range do you need peak power?

Is a 6.2, or any other aluminum block used motor out of the budget?

You should be okay to mill with the ASA cam, but we really need to know if the block will have flat top pistons or dish, if you mill 862's and have flat tops compression is going to be approaching 12:1 and that will need to be strongly considered for fuel and the cam

I think the Summit Ghost Cam would work well for power under the curve. Give them a call and ask.
