Tapping noise after engine install ? Okay so the 5.3 in my truck took a dump after 258k miles. My buddy wrecked his 2001 z71 so I bought the motor from him cheap to swap into my truck being as they’re the same year and his has 140k on it. I took this new engine apart, cleaned from top tier bottom inside and out, new oil pickup o ring, cleaned the pan, new oil pan gasket, new rear main seal and rear main cover seal, same for the front, new valley pan gasket, new intake manifold gaskets, new head gaskets, etc. the whole nine yards. Okay so after the install the motor has a ticking noise. Weird part is, if I start the engine it doesn’t tick until I rev it up, or put it in gear. If I shut it off and start it right back up the tick is gone, until I rev up or put it in gear, then the tick stays until I shut it off again. It almost sounds like a rod knock but this engine made zero noises before I pulled it. It’s definitely coming from the rear passenger side like around the starter almost. As far as I can tell I believe it’s in the bottom end it very rear of the engine. Any ideas on what this could be? Thanks in advance!

What I did notice today was leaving work I revved it to red line and let off. The tapping started. The truck was in park so I hit the starter one time and the tapping stopped. As in I turned the key to engage the starter for a split second and the tapping stopped. Until I revved up again. I’m confused

Yeah start is tight as hell. I tapped the key while it was running and it Park. I heard the starter engage and grind for a split second and the noise stopped. It will donthis everybsingke time. I don’t know if maybe the starter gear is riding in the flexplate. If that’s possible what would cause that?

Verdad Gallardo I haven't had one of those starters apart, I know the old style starters have a return spring to help pull the starter drive back in. I suppose if it was weak it might not pull it in far enough or strong enough to hold it in.
