If it is not too much trouble, please update this thread when you have the problem diagnosed. I subscribed to the thread, so even if it is months from now, I will eventually check back in. Thank you and good luck.

bsf - I will

yellowbrother - that's my first plan. That would be to make sure a lifter isn't messed up right?

just to be clear...when I said turn it over, I meant turning ur motor by hand manually...but if u want to be brave, you can just run ur motor as u have already...running the motor u would clearly see which lifter/valve ain't working....

the 5.3 motor I bought had a busted lifter #7....I'm guessing the lifter turned sideways and the wheel broke off against the cam...the wheel and other debris got flung around and messed up the counterweight on the crank...messed up the reluctor's tooth...broke the skirt on some of the piston...cam lobe was scratched up....so I paid 500 for a damn dirty old engine block....

OP: As a fellow "poor" LS enthusiast, let me throw one idea at you.

My LS spun a bearing in my fbody, I got a cheap LQ4 shortblock and am investing in ARP reusable headbolts and other "interchangeable" pieces and a tune in preparation for my next spun bearing or whatever. From this point forward problems like this are generally fixed with another cheap junkyard LQ4 shortblock and maybe pieceparts instead of an expensive hard-to-find aluminum LS1.

Note this only applies if you are poor like me but still want to play in this hobby LOL. Sorry for your loss. I'm in your same boat but this was my DD so it's really putting me out.

Did you find the root cause of your problem?

Not yet. I haven't started pulling it apart yet. I should have some time next week or the week after to dig into it

I was just thinking...if dead lifter, pull the valve cover and you should be able to lift the rockers maybe to identify which one is the culprit without starting it...just a thought...

I have the valve covers off. My next plan was to turn the crank by hand to see if all rockers were moving.

If its not a valve,, I'd pull the pan and check things visually ,, any rods loose? plus you can see the cam and see if you have a torn up lobe..
5.3's on eBay are between 1200 and 2500 fwiw.. Good luck.. And like everybody is saying,, don't jump at anything take your time ,,
More than once I thought I had a major issue and it turned out to the a non issue once I let it sit and jut thought it over..

I haven't gotten back into it yet. Had a pregnant wife that turned into a baby so I'll get back into it in a few months.

I would run it until it breaks. Atleast get some kind of enjoyment lol. Youll know what it is that broke once it breaks

I've thought about that too. But if I caught a spun bearing early and fixed it wouldnt the fix be a lot cheaper than if I let it break?

Weather is a bit better and I'm tired of paying taxes and insurance on a car that doesn't run so I'm going to fiddle with it again.

I turned over the engine. All rockers seem to be moving just fine. I guess that equals a spun bearing.

Are LS1 thin walled enough that it's not worth trying to fix the block? Or since its keeping oil pressure is it worth trying to save this block?

Perhaps the block isn’t hurt. If you haven’t dug into it yet, your only making presumptions. It will take you 30 minutes to find the problem, and that’s only if the balancer has to come off. Maybe a lifter? Stay encouraged.

If the lifter was the problem wouldn't one of the rockers not move?

30 minutes? I'm confused what could I do in 30 minutes? I figure if it's not a lifter then im going to have to pull the engine to find out what is going on in there.
