Default Quench too tight?

Stock LS1 rods, crank, and pistons. Torn down for a rebuild and to replace all bearings/gaskets/etc. Had the block decked while it was at the machine shop.

Shop took .002 off the deck, so the pistons are now out of the hole about .008-.009.
Thinking about running a .040 cometic...will this be too tight for quench? Won't be spinning it more than 6700...street car that will see the track once a month at most.

I've read alot of .035 targeted quench on here...how would you feel about .031 ish?

Cayenne...Didn't think I'd be talking with you on this part of the forum.
How long you been doing that for? Do you let everything get to operating temp before revving it. Any signs of it being too tight or is it all happy inside the sbe?

Lol, how goes it.

I have been doing it for a couple seasons now with zero issues including a road course event (Power Cruise) where my car lives from 6-7000 rpms for about 10 min straight, 2 sessions a day for 3 days if that gives ya a idea on how I drive my car lol.

I'm no professional engineer builder but have talked to a couple local and .030" + seems to be safe. .030" and below you are cutting it closer and closer. I was originally going to run around .025" quench but decided to play it a bit safer being on sbe including rod bolts and knowing how hard I drive it. My tuner also says I'm more than fine at .033"

I always let it get to operating temperature before going wot.

So did you measure the deck clearance to be .007 out of the hole like most guys seem to report? Then still went with a .040 Head Gasket?

I wouldn't even consider trying to run that tight without measuring it to verify the piston protrusion. Even then, the risk versus reward is too great when you get below .035” IMO.

Fully agree

The benefits will be very very negligible, and if it's too tight, you're looking at potentially grenading the entire engine. Juice ain't worth the squeeze, not even remotely.

Alright, Well I'll have to measure before I do anything, but the pistons should be out of the hole about .008-.010
If I confirm that, I'll be going with the cometic .045 and targeting .035 quench

Thanks gentlemen
