Default Build it or send it

Working on a swap and picked up this LQ4. Mileage unknown but yard thought it was at 220k when van rolled in. In good enough condition to send it after replacing rings, bearings, and oil pump or is this crusty old girl in need of a bore and full rebuild?

The few 6.0’s I’ve done at work have had some water spots that wouldn’t clean with a ball hone. Probably wouldn’t have had any issues, but being do it once kinda guy, just thrown them in the rigid hone and took them out .005 oversized and ordered a set of ls2 .005 over pistons. Beats setting up and boring .010-.060 over and cuts out some of the “might as well” snowball.

Didn't think of that option, thanks

The "might as well" is what I'm trying to avoid. Engine is going in $1,000 beater so tough to justify a $1,000-$1,5000 in machine shop work.

Was going to ARP rod bolts just bc. Anything else that is a mandatory?

dont put bolts in it unless you plan to resize the big end

i have yet to see a failure due to stock rod bolts.

clean the ring lands up by dunking in berrymans and send it

I should have made a poll ...

While using LS2 pistons is a good idea, it starts me me down the rabbit hole.

At a min I want to hot tank the block and get it cleaned up but just throwing the heads on to just send it is tempting.

No matter what will change the oil pump, not take g that risk

If you seen the vehicle it came out of and it was indeed wrecked then you know it was running at the time of the accident.
With that being said honestly it would depend on what your goals are, and since that is to build a beater and you already stated that you cant justify machine work then DONT TOUTCH IT!
Id rather have factory rings with 200k on them then some china ones so I wouldnt even re-ring it unless you get a good brand, same goes for the bearings.
But thats my personal opinion.

Van the motor came out of was driven to the yard, according to the yard owner

Motor will go in a Z31 which is a complete rust bucket. Plan to put 823 heads on it I got from another yard already rebuilt ($200 for the pair, sold the 317's for $250). Was going to put LS6 springs in, a mild cam, and LY6 intake manifold. Will be using a Z32 trans

Car gutted weighs ~2,600lbs so shouldn't take much to get it moving

Any good way to clean the pistons without pulling them?

brake cleaner will clean the tops, but that isn't gonna help the oil coked rings. seriously just pull em and dunk 'em over night---one at a time-- in berrymans

Slaps the heads on and go out in front by 1 vote....

Sure is tempting to just go that route.

I wouldn’t make my engine building desicions based off a online poll, but if the budget doesn’t have the extra $500 or so to rebuild it then run it, simple as that.
