TFS 205x vs AI ported 862 or 799?
I am building a 5.3 for my daily driven 89 C1500 and am looking to upgrade the cylinder heads. I have looked at the 205x and I know they are great on a 5.3, but I also have a spare set of 799's and 862's that could be ported.. Advanced Inductions is also pretty close to me, and there flow numbers on either head seem to best the 205x. Just looking to see if anyone has any real world experience/information. Thanks

If you have 799's they are identical to 243's. You have the best heads already.

Flow numbers only tell part of the story so a clean sheet design like the TFS will always have a higher potential, and the valve angles being more upright give you more PTV clearance, and the thicker decks are nice too. Not knocking AI, and if you went that route you'd still have a great head.
The gen x 205 is a CNC ported head and are 1100 - 1200 per head, the TFS as cast 220 head is a phenomenal performing head and are 885 each from summit. The only thing I don't know is what the minimum recommended bore is for the 220 and I didn't compare valve sizes between the 205 and 220. If they have the same valve size then they should be just fine as far as fitting in the bore. I would call Brian Tooley and ask him what he thinks about the 220 on a 5.3, they work REALLY well on a 5.7 so I would think they would still do well on a 5.3. And if you think you may ever go to a 5.7 or 6.0 then it's even better.
The most bang for buck is likely AI porting them, but the highest ceiling will be with the TFS.
You could also sell the 799's and put the money toward the TFS, that would nearly equal out the costs or come close and have a better overall head.

The 205s will perform best on a 5.3 for a daily driver, if you anticipate boring to 5.7 (iron block),
and or stroking down the road then the 220s or AI Ported OE castings would be the way to go.

Agreed. Current situation dictates port speed throttle response and torque which 300 CFM from a 205 CC runner is perfect. Getting 315 from a 226 CC doesn’t mean those things are better specially on a smaller 5.3 engine
I’d sell those 799 heads for 3-400 and go TFS 205 for sure.
