Stage 2 looks like a good cam.

While the heads are off, send them to AI for their port job and maybe HCR option. Get 62cc chambers and bump your compression up to 11:1. That's a good 40rwhp gain over where you are now.

A quality converter makes all the difference in the world. In a previous life as an SBC guy I had a 5200 stall converter behind a stout 400 and driving it around town was not as bad as it may first sound.

I hear ya. Two cars back I had TEA do a set of 799's, but there wont be any ported heads on this build, at least for this season. I will need tires and want to do a couple other things which will max out my budget for now.

Actually looking for a cheap set of 799's if anyone has a set laying around...

Around here 243/799 heads can be picked up at yards for $75-$150 / per.

799s would be worth 20HP.

Yes, our recommendations are the minimum of what it takes to get the engine "up on the cam". Most LS combinations are making very strong torque by 4500, so a 4500 converter would be quicker every time than anything in the 3's. Except they're a pain do deal with driving around for the most part...so they need to be crutched down as to not be annoying. Lot's guys like a 3600. seems to be a happy medium.

This thing had an ARP balancer bolt. I think it was the hardest one I have ever wrenched off. Took the old cam out and made a mistake and looked at the cam bearings...

What assembly lube do you guys use on your cams? For roller cams I have always used the same oil that goes in the crank. The Summit cam box is saying to use extreme pressure lubricant. What say you?

Thanks. No intention to unload the converter at this time. Hoping to have this running by mid March.
