Default What do you think about my cam idea for my C5

I have an '04 C5 with 6-speed. Only mod's are B&B PRT cat back and blackwing and high flow duct with smooth coupler.

I don't drag race but do run the car fairly hard once or so a month on some country twisties the rest of the driving is cruising and a few blasts through 3rd.

I do not want to inspect, change on a preventive maintenance plan or worry about valve springs. I would like a little lope at idle and some decent hp and tq across the power band. I will have the cam professionally installed and dyno tuned with LS1 edit . I will not be going to bigger heads. I will be installing some JBA shorty headers. As you can tell I'm going easy with this.

So what to get? GM hot cam? and there any Futral cams that are more aggressive but don't require the spring maintenance? Other canidates?

MTI C1 cam 221/221 .565/.565 114 or 112 LSA seems to meet your goals. My cam minus the XER intake lobe would work well. You can also go with a custom 218/218 with a XE lobe or an XE high lift lobe from Comp. Run a 114 or 112 LSA. Stay between 216 and 222 duration with stock heads to maintain good vacuum and excellent idle with a little rump.

i would stay awat from the Hot cam if smog or idle quality is an issues. It runs 219/228 dur w/ .525 lift on a 112 lsa. It sounds like a 232 duration cam and I think the exhaust dur is the reason. I my opinion there are better cams out there. Just stay away from the XER lobes if you don't want to worry about valve wear.

Good Luck

Lingenfelter GT3 cam comes to mind. Easy on the valve train and fairly unnoticeable.

I am in the process of buying AFR heads for my Z06. Because I couldn't wait for the AFR heads...about 3 months ago I had the Dual crane valve spring kit which runs about 400 dollars installed in these heads...titanium this and that..and I am selling these LS6 heads with the spring kit already installed..so you just have to have the heads put on with any cam under a .650 lift.

I went with the 224/224 .563 114lsa cam so the valve springs are way overrated..

Probably will last the life time of the car with this mild cam...

My car with the 224/224 114lsa cam is extremely close to stock...almost to the point that no one would know there is a cam in there..and it put out 396 rwhp..

Anyways..if your interested..I would sell these heads to you for $900 plus frieght..in about 3 to 5 weeks when the afr heads go on if you like.

FWIW..I wouldn't recommend shortie headers..as there are tons of long tube header choices out there too..

I've put out a few feelers to see if anyones interested in these recently built LS6 street driven heads.......

Let me know...and good luck in whatever you decide.

My recomendation for a mild street cam is the 224/224 114lsa...as it passes emissions sniffer tests out in california and really is a nice boost in power..

duration won't kill you. duration won't kill valve springs. A combination of aggressive lift and duration toghether will kill springs.

XE-R lobes for instance make springs a wear item. Look at the GM World Challenge cam, it lives fine behind LS6 springs, and its a big cam.

Skip shorty headers, they are not much better than the stock.

The hot cam has quite a bit of lope, but will live fine behind mild springs. What HP goal do you have in mind, and what RPM range do you want to limit your car to? I know of a cam for stock heads that might do well for you..

I am planning to use a set of PP 5.7 heads with the Patriot gold springs and a 224/224 .581.......with those springs the general concensus is that spring life is not an issue. Agree/disagree?

Tom, good luck on your mods, J-rod's reputation qualifies him as an advisor. BTW, I still haven't mounted those wheels I bought from you...go figure.

If you are going to use those shorty headers just get yourself a nice split pattern cam to make up for the lack of exceptional exhaust flow. Something like a 224/230 cam would be nice on a 112 lobe separation. This is only if you don't have to pass emissions. This cam will get you some good lobe and provide good gains with those shorty headers.
