Default Lifter preload?

I have a GM 5.3 L33 from a Silverado and have a Comp 212/218 Hi-Lift cam to go in, I plan to keep the standard lifters as they looked fine.

I have read numerous different pre load suggestions so if somebody can please clarify what I should be aiming for that would be great.

I have the standard pushrods at the moment but I plan to use heavier duty ones once I calculated the lengths required. I also already have a Comp Cams pushrod length adjustable tool.
So what pre load should I be aiming for?

Thanks in advance.

Your going to hear opinions varying anywhere from .060” to .120” preload.
I shoot for .075”ish with LS7 lifters, and it’s fairly quiet. I’ve seen guys set it at .100” and they drive it like a loaner.

With a small cam like that I would just use stock pushrods, tighten down and go.
But of course you should "ALWAYS" check for proper pushrod length............................................ ......................

Thanks for the reply

You're exactly right, so many different opinions!

I don't know if the lifters in my engine would be the same as the LS7 ones or not. My engine is from a 2005.

I'll aim for your suggested 0.075" preload.

Thanks for this

So you don't think it is worth upgrading the pushrods?

If not, I may get lucky with the standard pushrod lengths being the same as what I need. Of course I guess though if I do need new rods (different length) then it makes sense to use uprated ones?

Don't forget about valvesprings, if yours are still stock, you should replace them with at least 918's.

Upgrading pushrods is never a bad idea, and here just a nice set of chromoly aftermarket ones from a reputable source will be plenty for your setup. That cam is well proven and should do you well.

Well with those stiff springs I probably wouldnt risk using the stock pushrods for $100 you can get some nice ones
Just curious but what is this going into?

Thanks ALL,

I think for the low cost I'll get some uprated pushrods.

Thanks Guys,

It's a Westfield Sportscar Kit. They did a model many years ago that used a UK 3.5L Rover V8 (originally a Buick V8 I believe).
https://westfield-sportscars.co.uk/

I wanted to build a V8 this time (it's my 3rd one, first was 4 pot NA, 2nd was 4 pot Cosworth Turbo),

Another shot of the engine bay.

I'm really happy that I've been able to squeeze the engine under the bonnet without having any lumps or bumps to give it away. Only the 2x external side pipes
