Default 799 Head Swap

I just finished installing 799 heads on my '01 Camaro. I seem to have picked up a nice bit of power, so totally worth it. I need to fix a broken ground wire, but everything went well.

Thanks. I went with Mahle 54442 mls gaskets that are supposed to be .041 compressed. I think my car needs a tune with the new heads, still driving to see how it runs.

Are you running the stock cam still and what part of Cali are you in? I'm from Mission Viejo but live in MN now.

I'm going with a .41 as well, not sure the brand, on some stock 243s when I throw in a bigger cam next year. Good to see the stock ls6 heads are good for a decent bump in power.

Nice! I'm from Santa Ana, but now live in LA county near Compton lol.

Yeah I still have the stock '01 cam in my Camaro. 243s/799s should bring you a nice bit of power with a cam upgrade.

My wife was born in Compton haha and I lived in Cerritos for about a year before leaving CA which I think was right on the OC/LA border. The car scene kind of sucks in MN. Wish it was as good as in Cali. Everyone drives so slow here too with the lack of many 4+ lane highways. I do miss that about CA. Anyways, good to know that bolting on the 243s will give a decent bump in power as I was all set on the PRC 225s but other priorities came up.

WHOA. Small world! I lived in Cerritos since it was called Dairy Valley, since birth (we had a dairy farm). Now in central Cali near Fresno.
Yeah 243's are good heads; best part being them and 799's (identical) very easy to find since they came on every Gen IV 4.8/5.3.

Nice! Yeah I lived right off Pioneer near Cerritos college. I never knew it was only 5 minutes from the arcade/mini golf place in the Karate Kid movie.

Yup, you're correct. I got the 799 heads so I could port/modify them and quickly install them after taking off the stock 241 heads. I did minor work such as removing the rocker stud boss lump, reduced the swirl ramp, modded the intake valves, and got rid of casting flash. I'm happy with the results of the swap.

Curious if you lapped the valves to ensure they were all seated in tightly or not?

David Vizard shows that grinding material away on the intake valve improves flow, so I did the same thing. You can find the video on Youtube. I did not lap the valves, but the heads did not appear to have many miles on them.

You use a lathe for this or maybe a valve grinder? I did not watch the video yet...

He used Drill and a bench grinder...
Usually it would be done on a valve grinder but could be done on a lathe too I guess

Yeah, Vizard used a bench grinder and he also said to modify the combustion chamber for improved throttle response, but I didn't do that. I didn't want to lose compression since with the 799 heads I'm around 10.69 to 1 compression. I'm trying to put a hurtin on the Dodge boys.

If it's okay to post a link I'll do that later, anyway here is the title of the video with the tips on head porting "David Vizard's Vortec cylinder head porting" and it has good stuff in it.

Vizard is an automotive genius. If he were to bang heads (pun intended lol) with Tony Mamo and Pat Guerra there would be a rift in the gearhead space/time continuum.

Update:

I was driving down the highway and for the 1st time since I've owned the '01 Camaro it chirped the tires when downshifting. It scorches the tires when I'm driving slower than 30 mph, but this was faster than 30 mph. Thumbs up for 799 heads and home porting.
