AutoX/RR cam

Thinking about getting into more autocross type racing and the cam i have now is def not ideal i would say. My setup now is PRC 225s, FAST 92 and a BTR 231/243 .631/.620 If anyone has suggestions let me know...i was think somewhere in the 224/228ish with low lift...something easy on the drivetrain but really just guessing.

I would think gears would help more than a smaller cam in auto cross. As for road courses it comes down to how well you manage your gearbox. On most roadcourses I don't see why you would ever be below 3500 rpm.

Im sure gears would help but my cam doesnt come i to power until like 4k rpm. Im sure it would be ok for road race but i think it would be too lazy down low for autox

As others have stated, the SUM-8715 Ghost cam (222/233 115+5 .600/.575) has an intake closing point of 43 degrees. SUM-8720 is our high lift Stage 2 truck cam and specs out at 218/227 112 + 2 .600/.600 and has an intake closing point of 39 degrees for even more low end. The lobes on both are very stable at high rpm and spring lift won't be an issue. This also lets you hold in a gear at high rpm as you're making transitions through certain corner sequences. I'm building a BMW with a 408 for road racing and had Cam Motion make my cam. The specs they suggested were 226/234, 114+4, .612/.597. I don't plan on running the engine past 6200-6500 rpm, and they said that setup will be great for pulling out of corners and down a straight.

Actually your original idea of 224/228 is quite good. 112 lsa and no ground-in advance.

Biggest thing you'll do for a autox/ rr cam is get rid of that heavy monster clutch for something light that allows the engine to accelerate off the corner. A light clutch will also allow for faster rev match downshifts. This is assuming your suspension is sorted and you can drive......if not then nothing will help except for more practice.

If you do some math you’ll find, at least for autox that with a higher rev range afforded by the “big” cams will allow more gear and the net result is more power/torque to the tires

Well i got with cam motion and they spec'd me a new cam, excited to see how it compares to the old cam. Hopefully alot more low to mid range where the old cam was lacking. Probably ditch my y pipe/slp loudmouth with some hooker blackheart true duals as well.
New cam specs:
225/229 duration @ .050''
111 lobe sep, 109 ICL

I gave them my old cam specs, told them i wasnt happy with the low end performance and wanted something much stronger in the low and mid range and something that would work well in AutoX/RR. This what they spec’d for me so i went with it. Should drive alot better to with less overlap in the new cam.

I'm a novice myself and I suggested op try the stock Cam to start his first track event and he's more likely to come back and try again but He's already made up his mind though. I don't know where he autox at but they won't let you drive your first time where I go you have to ride with a few vets first and they certainly would put you in a modified class with that much overlap but honestly what he wants, that's a way better all around cam spec than what he's got now so he's going to be happier with how it drives regardless of how he can drive it at autox
