they are also using them for the ease of not having to deal with modifying the firewall to fit the distributor.

FEAR THE LS1, your buddy,s only got you by 209 cubic inches and 300 less wt.Why didn"t you build a stroker ironblock at least a 408 or 427?If you just want a racecar get an older chevy gut it and put in a 600 plus ci bigblock.Your comparison was not very comparable,346 to 555 ci plus he might have a better race chassis then you????I"ve seen 9 second ls1s in racecars too! What trans is he running th400 or powerglide?Keep it coming guys.

That was my point.
Also his Nova chasis is nothing special, full door car, back halved with ladder bars not even 4 linked. He also runs a TH400.
Don't get me wrong I love my LS1 but a BBC done right will own all.

Many have commented on people putting LS1's in their older hotrods. GREAT! Its not common place, out of the ordinary, might win some awards, but it won't win a drag race to a similar priced BBC setup. Now think of it the other way, how many BBC's do you see in a 4th gen? Just as "out of the ordinary" as an LS1 in an old street rod.
I was recently at a PSCA race and there were four 4th gen Camaros running in the low to mid 8 second range. None of them running an LS1 or LT1. All of them running 500+ cubic inch BBC's. I will guarantee the reason for this is cost. IMHO a BBC jammed in a 4th gen engine compartment is a lot more impressive than an LS1 in an old Nova.

Holley makes a nice looking lt1 style fi for the bigblock with a twin blade TB.Super Chevy build a 496 with an all Lunati rotating assembly and 10.5 CR had a set of Holley aluminum heads and Lunati hydralic roller with 236 intake and 242 exhaust on 114lda with about 650 lift,it had the Holley singleplane type intake and 4 barrel TB.This was one of the best bigblock build ups I"ve seen that could be a daily driver as it idled with 14 inches of vacuum and it made 615 hp at about 6000rpm.The easiest way to make it better would be a 502 with the bigger bore or a 540 with bigger bore and same 4.25 stroke.I would like to see a build up with the new AFR 305 or 315 cc heads as they have great flow numbers with a smaller port. But as you all know a 408 ironblock will make about the same power as this 496 with the SAME cam specs for about the same money, thats 88 cubic less.It all depends on what you want, but to put a bb in an ls1 car thats a real daily driver as this post was started would be a ton of work and extra weight on the front of the car would hurt the handling and braking not to mention gas mileage.Probably 250 or more extra wt over an aluminum ls1. Now if you want all out race car then get the biggest bb you can stuff in it.

I vote for the Steve Schmidt 760 cube "Commander."
1560 hp n/a. 52 large delivered to your door or make it nitrous ready for an additional 1800 bucks. There is a dynograph on the site of the smaller 705 cube "Hulk" and it has a crazy power curve as well.

Imagine the "commander" with a few stages of nitrous. Say hello 6's in a 3000 lb car!

Most folks won't take a 2000 Z/28 and put a BBC Chevy into it for obvious reasons.
Now if I were building a backhalf 1st gen I can see where the BBC gets priority it's a tossup at that point on which you can do.
I met John Cunningham a while back and he has a 540 BBC Nova that runs low 9's on pump gas. Amazing. He cruises it. He was top qualifier at the Hot Rod Pump Gas Drags.
Putting a BBC into a 4th is about exotic as a BBF in a 5.0 Mustang body...
I bet a 540 BBC total is more than $10k Lee, or no?

I agree PROSTOCK JOHN,on the street ls1 rules over most all motors but for all out racing cubes are the ticket. If anyone has some low 10"s or some 9 second times with LS1 even in a race only set-up let"s see them!!!
